The Road to Inspiration
So I've been asked "What inspired me to make a RWBY game" and I thought it was a good idea to write a post about it.
It was actually a few reasons, not all of them the most noble. Some of them are quite mean in nature. It's not something I'm proud to admit but its what has gotten me here.
I should start out by saying I was first inspired by Monty Oum. I don't know much about the guy but I liked his work. I like how he made a name for himself through is work. Things like Dead Fantasy, Haloid, and of course RWBY. I was obsessed with indie creations and fan works at the time, and I still am to a good degree but it was impressive how he seemingly made vastly popular things all on his own. He was a creative with lots of skill and made his mark on the world, I wanted to do the same.
After his death the series to a down turn. RWBY Volume 3 was the last season I can say I truly enjoyed. Vol. 4 felt meh and 5 was a semi-mindless watch in which I wasn't really invested. I watched out of a desire to see the show through what ever end it came to. It was turn your brain off consumption. I didn't make theories, I didn't participate in the fandom, I just watched what Monty's legacy would be.
In the Hiatus between 4 and 5 I drowned myself in RWBY YouTube content. At the time I was looking for ways to write stories and make something something that would leave a mark like Monty. Which led me in the camp of this you-tuber named Unicorn of War. They introduced me into the fandom that I didn't even know existed. I've seen fans in passing and I remember the amount of views Monty's vids got, but I didn't know there was a community. From there it was onto Fatman Falling to Celtic Phoenix then Vexed Viewer to Muffin Man Dan and EruptionFang then Twiins iinc to Judgmental Critter then Adel Aka.
(Believe it or not it was in that order, and for a short time I thought Twiins was running two channels)
During that time of binging on YT RWBY content it wasn't hard to notice the shear amount of corrections made on the show. Adel and Vexed especially got me to take a critical eye to the show, rather than watch mindlessly. Monty was gone, so much of the action was gone, so the show had to fall back on it's writing which was torn apart collectively. Each person that I watched pointed out things that chipped away at the quality of the show. Its like with each channel my eyes where being opened, seeing another flaw that the other missed. Making me a bit jaded.
Then came Grimm Eclipse, I had known about it since the first Kotaku article, but I never took it seriously. I knew I wanted to play it, but I never took the time to invest. When it became an official title I was intrigued and wanted to make a purchase, but I didn't play until it was out on the Xbox. I abandoned it after the first cave. I wasn't until the Adel introduced me to the Biibii RWBY game that I really took stock of Grimm Eclipse. I watched reviews, followed up on developer interviews and logs. I looked to find out everything I could. I was cool to know that Rooster Teeth enlisted a fan game creator to make an official game.
Sadly with all my research, I came to place to learn the game was "trash". No significant care, barely any updates and improvements, lack luster story, repetitive game-play, a hungry and perturbed fan-base. Meanwhile the mobile game that was in the same genre was overseas and not accessible to non-Chinese audiences. There where no other game alternatives outside of upcoming the clash of clans clone Amity Arena. A game that non-series fans found to be "mediocre" on release.
My experience with Monty's creation had become a world of "Mediocrity". Its was like the RWBY name was shrouded in that word. The You-tubers I followed, had rewrites, many story and medium corrections. The in franchise games were scarce, unavailable, and or poorly received.
It was a that point that it all kind of clicked. Why not make a product? Why not make something to "address" both issues. Why not make an RPG?
Which led me here.
Expectations for the Game
In my digging to start work on this project I came across two other Fan-Games JPDE and RWBY: Vale of Darkness. When I saw them I was quite arrogant. I thought "I'll be better than those games and even Grimm Eclipse given enough time." I felt that way because none of the people I follow have ever even mentioned those fan-games, Not even EruptionFang or Calxiyn, who have both mentioned fan games on their channel in past.
However, It wasn't until I put pen to tablet that I realized how insane I was. In my head I had this grand picture of how the game is going to look, and play and be. How Rooster Teeth would see it and be impressed and want me to make it an official alt story like the Manga and the DC comics.
But the reality is... it takes determination and SKILL and a support system. Either through team members or just loyal fans that cheer you on to "keep moving forward". As much as I want to gush and brag what I want this game to be, at the end of the day I feel like what it will turn out to be, could be no better than VoD, JPDE, or GE. The creators of those games gave their best shot with the skills and time they had. What they did is a feat that should never be looked down on.
Now, I'm in the same starting place, attempting to reach the achievements they have made.
I'm just another fan looking to do something about discontent I and others feel with this franchise. I want to provide something for myself and for the fans to enjoy in tandem with the Official products.
This could very well be just another "mediocre" RWBY product. I know this wont be Dragon Quest 11 or FF7Remake or even FF7, but I do what I can to stand out and impress those that take the time to view and play.
