The Bad Boxart Challenge was a game jam based around horrible boxart. Developers choose some boxart from the gallery of trash, which is full of original boxart that misrepresented the game that it was made for. Developers then needed to make a new game based on that artwork. There were many games entered in this jam, I recorded all of them in my video compilation series. Below are some of my favorites, in a random order.
Basketball Masacre is a runner styled game where you play a mad basketball destroying a school. Cheerleaders roam the hall, waiting for the basketball game to start. Little do they know that you are on the loose! You can run into cheerleaders to destroy them. Killing several of the cheerleaders in a row will allow you to gain combos and score more points. There are some things in the hall; tables, chairs, and beams. You must avoid those or bounce over them to continue going at a good speed. The cops know of your attack and are coming soon. At the end of the time limit, the game will be over. However, the points you have earned can be used to buy upgrades; more time, faster movement, higher bounces, and more. These upgrades will help you earn more points as you continue playing!
Tongue Pong is a smutty pong game that allows you to play pong with naked characters. You and your friend, playing local co-op (or you can play against the computer) can pick out an outfit for your female character. There are a few items to select; a couple of tank tops, just underwear, censored bars, or completely naked. You can also choose a few different hair colors, skin colors, and face shapes. Once you are in the game you must use your extremely long tongues to lick the ice-cream pong ball back and forth. You must lick the scoop portion of the ice cream, as the cone will not bounce back. The developer does plan on adding some new features very soon. More characters like naked men, bears, and more women will be added to the game, as well as splatters from the ice cream cone.
College SLAM has you running from a murderious basketball! You were just playing a regular game of basketball when a giant ball burst through the stadium and is now trying to eat you. As you run across the floor, there are chairs and benches in the way. You must use your jump boost to go over these obstacles to earn money. If you run into any of the objects on your basketball court, you will fall behind - getting closer to the ball. You only have a limited amount of jump boost - shown in your basketball shoe at the top of the screen. Each level of this game adds more objects to avoid; like taxi cabs and cows. Soon the ball even starts eating the cows, splattering blood onto your screen and making it harder to see. How many levels can you make it through before you are eaten by a giant basketball?
Jelly Boy 3D is a charming little game about collecting puzzle peices, fruit, and musical notes. In a small, platformer world made of building blocks and toys, you must explore around collecting different puzzle pieces to unlock the exit. Claws that are attached above the head and walking teeth are also dotted around the level looking to hurt you. You can punch the teeth with the third arm that appears out of your stomach to destroy them. You can collect fruit and music notes to restore some of your health if you get hit. Once you have collected all of the puzzle, you can go back through the door and end the game. This game is kind of short, only having one level, but is fun to explore!
Rage Ball is an really well made arcade-styled game where you must eat basketball hoops in order to stay full. You are super hungry and thinking about destroying the school. In order to keep you full and away from the building, you are quenching your hunger with falling basketball hoops. As the hoops fall from the sky, you automatically bounce up and down. You can change the bounces to be higher or lower (unable to catch hoops - yet you move faster). Sometimes special basketball hoops, stuck in place in the air instead of falling, appear on the screen. These hoops require you to jump higher, but do give you an extra life when you score through them. If you miss any hoops (other than the 1-up hoop) you will lose a life. Once you lose all of your lives, you will have to watch the school you love burn.
Potbelly is an arcade game about competitive eating! You are trying to eat the most foods in one minute without getting sick. Each of your two hands can grab onto a piece of food. You can then eat bites of them until they are finished. Some of the foods that are being given to you are spoiled - so you may want to throw those away or avoid them, because you might end up sick. You need to watch how fast you do eat food, because if your stomach gets too full too fast then you will end up puking and be disqualified. If you have some drinks, you can lower the amount of food in your stomach faster, but if you have too many you might also end up sick and have to forfeit. Try to balance how you eat so that you can win the competition!
Suraisu Ninja: Sukuta Simulator has you controlling a ninja’s scooter. You must provide the ninja with enough momentum to fly through the sky and smash skeleton heads. Smashing more than one while airborne will allow you to gain combos and earn more points. These heads must be attacked quite fast, as you are a ninja and all ninjas must move fast. If you destroy skeleton heads too slowly, the bar at the bottom of the screen will run out and the game will be over. Portals also appear in the sky; once your ninja bumps into them, they randomly appear somewhere else on the screen. Sometimes white ninjas also appear and fall from the sky. If they end up on the ground, you must smash them with the scooter before they take over. Remember, you are only a scooter - the biggest tool to your ninja - and you must do your job as well as you can!
Lone Survivor/Wacky Painter is a strange, creepy game that was found in the office of the late developer. It has been warped, so it is quite temperamental. You can choose to play the Lone Survivor or the Wacky Painter in this 2 game pack, but it doesn’t really matter. The game itself has a mind of its own. The wacky painter is there to teach you about art and painting - things like making a masterpiece, learning about artists, painting a sunset or cleaning up a bit of spilled paint. The lone survivor has a much sadder story - being the last man alive in a post-apocalypse world, just trying to find a way to live. At random times switches between the two games. Sometimes you will be painting a picture and come to find it is a dead animal in the world of lone survivor. It’s quite creepy, using the sadness and bleak world to create some form of art. At the same time, this creepiness and mystery of what will happen next will keep you playing - until you have finished your masterpiece.
CHESS, in Space is a really neat, short game about playing tic-tac-toe in space! Your ship has been compromised - exploding in two pieces. There is not enough supplies for you and your robot to both survive inside the ship. Your robot is sort of broke, but also self aware so he would like to survive. In order to fairly decide who should stay at the ship, you must play three games of tic-tac-toe. The only issue with playing tic-tac-toe in space is, well, no gravity. The pieces do start to float away. You must be fast and win three matches to stay in your spaceship. The gameplay itself is short, but the opening scene and graphics are super well made.
Bad Box Art: Wining Post 3 is a very strange game about someone who has fallen behind a bunch of horses. You are attached to a bunch of horses, flailing around behind them, as a giant head tries to eat you. As you move around the track, the head bounces along and sometimes changes direction. It opens its mouth and attempts to eat you. If you run into this head, it will eat a part of you - legs first - until you die. As you survive for longer, the head will start to move faster and eventually start firing lasers. From time to time you can get another life, but this game is super challenging, so don’t count on those extra lives. Just try to survive as long as you can in this weird game.
Astronautica is a space puzzler where you must go through black holes in order to try and get back home. You and your computer have been lost in space. You seem to have fallen through a black hole and the only way to get back home is to go back through black holes. You must push blocks around that may be in the way or push them onto trap doors to allow more flooring to get to the black hole. Some black holes are not that easy to get to and require your super 3D powers. You are able to sort of shift the dimension of space in a way that blue or red platforms appear that you can then walk on. You can also talk to your computer out in space. Hitting enter will allow your computer to tell you jokes, what it is thinking about, and general conversation. At least you won’t get lonely trying to find your way back home!
Lone Survivor: Fury Brush has you trying to take care of your companion while also painting your fence red. You are the lone survivor - the last person alive on earth. You only have your dog, Rusty, to keep you company in this sad, desolate earth. To make things a bit happier, you are continuing your love of painting by spicing up your fence! The only issue is, radioactive lizards are coming towards your dog. You really want to get this fence painted, but you must drop your brush and grab your gun to kill off these lizards. When you have your gun, you can only shoot lizards off in the side that they appear on. Do watch out, though, because they sometimes explode and the backlash can hurt Rusty! The fence does take more than one coat of paint to get perfect - and you wouldn’t settle for anything less. So it does take some time to get the whole thing painted. If you are up for the challenge, try to keep your dog alive while getting your favorite fence painted!
Cheeky Checkers is a silly game about playing checkers with your father. As it turns out, your father is very competitive when it comes to checkers. Even though he claims it is just a friendly match, he will start to get angry if you beat him. If his “dadness” bar fills, he will then cheat by smashing one of your checkers off the board. This makes it quite hard to beat him at checkers, as he is a massive cheater. If you are fast enough, and strategic enough, you might be able to beat your dad. If not, he will forever be the best dad at checkers!
