Jam Favorites: Community Jam 2015

Some fantastic games made around the theme Cooperation!

The Community Jam 2015 was a jam held by volunteers of IndieCade. The theme for this jam was “Cooperation” - though not necessarily multiplayer cooperation. There were many games entered in this jam, I recorded all of them in my video compilation series. Below are some of my favorites, in a random order.

Go On Without Me is a colorful puzzler that has you leaving some people behind. In this game you must make it through the level to a colorful portal at the end. In order to overcome obstacles, you must leave your player behind and use a new player at the start. By this I mean build stairs and towers with past players to move the current player to the exit. There are many things in the way of an exit, from black clouds of doom to huge holes. You must figure out the fastest and best way to get to the end without losing tons of players. My favorite aspect to this game is the funny phrases the players say as they are being left behind; things like “I would have just held you back!” “Avenge me!” or “What’s the point?” It adds quite a bit of fun to the simple game.

Together We Can End This All is an arcade shooter where you are a mystical blob. The world is ending and giant grey monsters are floating around trying to kill you. You must gather up purple dormant blobs, which then change color, and shoot them out at these gray creatures. The colorful blobs you pick up will not be harmed, but instead shot out around the field. You are free to go collect them again, charge up your shot, and use them to destroy the gray creatures. Each gray creature you destroy, the higher your score becomes. This simple game is very well made and quite fun to play.

Ruby & Majesty: Treasure Team is a game about two players who are looking for treasure. This single-player game has you control two characters: a bat and a person. The person, named Ruby, is able to move blocks and push buttons. Majesty, the bat, is also able to push buttons, but cannot move blocks. Instead, he can fly over spikes. Both Ruby and Majesty are working together to find some treasure! They are faced with room after room of puzzles and traps. They must then work together to figure a way out. From flying arrows, moving spikes, buttons and moving blocks - all the way to the treasure. This team must do what they do best - figure out a way!

Dwoje is a simple looking puzzle based game, where you play as Blu and Yello, two circles who are fighting off a virus in the system. Each of these circles must collect data in the form of circles of matching color. These bits of data aren’t always easy to reach. The yellow circle is smaller, though it can bounce higher than the blue circle. You might need to use both circles together, jumping on top of one, to reach other bits of data. Soon, the game becomes even more dependent on cooperation as buttons start to appear. One circle will need to stay on buttons to keep them pushed. Some buttons launch the circles up into the air to get to other places. Sometimes boxes appear to help the players out. This game may look pretty simple, but it becomes quite challenging.

Murdering is a challenging game about a murder of crows (also known as a flock of crows). These crows are quite hungry. They must find some prey to eat. Prey comes in the form of humans. For crows, humans are quite hard to catch. You are up in the sky and they seem to run away at the sound of you. So you must quietly find a human, then start crowing for backup. Once you start crowing, the human will run of course. You must follow them, keeping them in the screen as wolves arrive to help. The wolves will eat the human then your murder will get to dine on the leftovers. If you wait too long, your crows will start dropping to the ground - dead of hunger. This game is an odd example of cooperation that is slightly creepy, but works.
