The Familiar Game Jam 4 is both a physical game jam as well as an online game jam, annually held in Spain. This time, the developers were challenged to create a game inspired by a 90’s movie. They also needed to make two separate endings to their game, all in 48 hours. There were quite a few fantastic games, many with awesome graphics. I was able to play and record all of the games entered into this jam in my video compilation series. Below are a few of my favorites, in no particular order.

Multipass This top down shooter has you moving from room to room killing aliens with a girl strapped to your back searching for an exit.. The rooms contain aliens and sometimes random boxes that can either give you health or new weapons. These new weapons only last for a limited amount of time, so use them wisely! The girl on your back has the passcode for opening doors, which are marked with where they lead. Be careful not to get hit too many times or the girl will die and the game will be over. The artwork for this game, specifically the people’s faces at the top of the screen have a very hand drawn look. This shooter is even gamepad supported, so you can really get into it!

Bogey Jam, a game based on the movie The Nightmare Before Christmas, has you delivering Halloween Town gifts to the people of the real world. These children are expecting normal toys for Christmas,
l;jbut instead will be getting evil copies! You must travel from Halloween Town to collect gifts, then go into Christmas Town to deliver them. This game is a timed platformer, because soon the kids in Christmas Town will wake up. You must get as many gifts down the chimneys before the time runs out. This game is a bit clunky, but has really a really nice concept as well as cool graphics!

Ed Wood’s Crazy Adventure in this short but funny game you are aiding Ed Wood in making the movie Plan 10 From Outer Space. With basically no budget, you must focus on getting scenes filmed as fast as possible. There are two simple scenes to complete over and over again, as fast as possible. The first scene involves the simple act of running through a door. You must direct the character to run straight through the door by clicking, or else the whole scene will fall apart. The second scene involves shooting down a town (as alien space ships). You can control the main ship, which moves up and down on a string, and shoot at the city around you. As you make these scenes, a budget (almost like a timer) is decreasing. You somehow do not even have the money to complete the low budget effects, so Ed asks you to steam from the producer to obtain enough money to complete the film. Can you make such a low budget movie?

Jumanjam, a game based on the movie Jamanji, that you can play alone or with up to four friends. At the beginning of each turn you must roll a dice. The person who makes it to the end first, will win. After the dice is rolled, you will be read a riddle and a mini game will start up. You must complete the minigame in order to keep your place on the board. If you fail, you move back to the last place you were. These mini games all seem to be platformers of various challenges. Some of them require you to avoid monkeys, bats, or bullets to make it to the end. Others involve avoiding quicksand to make it to the end. This game is very challenging and quite fun to play with friends!
There are many other cool games that you can check out here.
