The Low Rez Jam Jam was a game jam that challenged developers to make a low resolution game - 64 x 64. There were many, many games entered in this jam, I recorded all of them in my video compilation series. Below are some of my favorites, in a random order.

Dash Maximus is a rage-inducing platformer where you must boost up walls in order to jump. You have traveled to a rocky wasteland planet for a distress signal. When entering the planet, your ship went haywire and crashed deep inside a cave on the planet. Your suit’s thruster jets have malfunctioned as a result of this, making your escape from this cave even more difficult. You cannot jump, but instead must boost up walls to get around. This is quite tricky as some walls might not lead to where you want to go, causing you to fall into lava or lasers. You must attempt to dash to the exit to get off of this planet, though the challenge can keep you stuck beneath the surface for the rest of your life.

Wellma is a cute little garden survival game that has you feeding Wellma, the Earth Mother. Wellma the Earth Mother is awake and needs feeding. As a wellmaling, it is your job to fulfill Wellma’s desires so that the people of Earth will have a good harvest. Wellma wants specific food delivered to her at a fast pace, so you must find the right foods and bring them to her as fast as possible. At first, she asks for simple things like apples from trees and fruit pulled from plants in the ground. After a few rounds, Wellma starts asking for live creatures like bugs and rabbits which must be picked up at the right time so you can capture them. Once you have an item she wants, just throw it right into her mouth. After she eats all of the items, she will thank you and move onto a new round. Can you keep the Mother of Earth happy in this relaxing survival game?

Pucker ‘n’ Pluck is an adorable and relaxing farming game with a bit of a twist. You are a farmer who owns a decent sized plot of land. On this far, you are able to dig the ground, plant seeds, break rocks, pull weeds, and chop down trees. Growing plants is your only source of income, so you must keep your farm growing by growing your plants correctly. These plants not only need water and sunlight to grow, but they also need love. You can show your plants love by giving them a big kiss each day - or several times a day - to help them grow. Once your plants have all of the things they need to grow, they will shoot up like profitable weeds, growing quite rapidly in this game. After they become ripe, you can pick and sell them to gain money for more seeds to plant! This farming game is quite easy to play, but is nice and relaxing as you grow and love your farm.

Pet Rock is a cute little pet that you can play around with or leave in the corner of your screen while you work. This little pet rock is much more interesting than its real life counterpart - an actual rock. You must feed the rock green gems when it’s hungry, play ball or pet it to keep it happy and avoid throwing it against walls. If your pet becomes very happy, it will gravitate towards your mouse pointer, showing you that it loves you. You can also customise its look and rockiness to be what you like in a rock. This rock is a nice pet, cute to watch, and you never even have to clean up any pet-related messes! So have a pet rock for yourself and enjoy looking after this little creature!

Time Traveling Space Pirates is a looting, rum drinking pirate game where you must pretend to be pirates while pillaging inferior earthlings! You and your friends are aliens who have decided to go to earth to pretend to be pirates. You’ve got a ship and now you plan to dock on islands and pillage them, stealing all of their treasure. Once you have a treasure chest, you must make your way back to the ship and leave the island. Treasure isn’t the only source of gold on the island, sometimes there are bonus coins lying around as well as pots and boxes to smash. Rum may also be on the island, though they will impair your vision for a bit more of a challenge. Earthlings will try to defend against your attack, so you must be quick and make it back to your ship with as much as possible. You can then use this loot to upgrade your ship on the alien space station, before collecting your crew and going out to pillage once again. Pretend to be pirates while you pillage and drink Earth away!

Legend of Xenia is a retro-inspired open world adventure game that has you exploring an island. You have woken up on an island without memories of your past or how you got here. You must uncover what happened through the people and adventures that wait for you in this new place. You can now find a sword, before attacking slimes and making your way through tall grass and into a new part of the island. Once you are towards the center, you will find houses, some of which have people who can help you on your quest. You are able to learn spells to aid in defending yourself, just make sure you have enough mana to use it! Soon, you must venture into a fallen castle, starting to discover your past. This game is full of people to interact with, stories to learn, and a great adventure.

Drive Forever is a creepy driving game where you must control a car going somewhere on a dark road at night. You are not sure where you are going, but you know that it will take forever to get there. You must drive around, avoiding other cars and trying not to drive off the road, so that you can get to wherever you are going. If you hit too many things, your car will break down and the game will end. As you continue to ride, questions or statements pop up on the screen, questioning where you are going or when you will get your life together. These questions coupled with the black and white graphics and the games sound provide a slightly creepy driving experience. How long will you last?

Snake Pit is a classic/JRPG hybrid that has you collecting the lost souls of dead gouls. You need to collect these lost souls so that they can finally rest. You are not a lost soul, and can die - becoming one of the souls you are collecting, if you don’t watch out. Snake demons and strange creatures inhabit this land, you must avoid them on your journey to collect the lost souls. Between each area there are small towns, or people that you can visit and talk to - to break up your tireless work. You are able to double jump and drift back down to platforms, avoiding monsters and claiming souls. This game looks very Halloween themed and has a great bunch of chiptune music to listen to while you play!

Babelburger is a charming game that has you creating pixel burgers! This game is pretty simple, you are making burgers to order. At the bottom of the screen you have the essentials- cheese, burgers, lettuce, tomatoes, and buns. You must look at the burger that is ordered (which is displayed by rectangular color blocks) and pick the right ingredients to build it up from the top. A timer is ticking down, so you must complete as many burgers as possible in that time frame. If you get a burger correct, it will add a bit of time onto your timer. This game is oddly addictive and the look of the completed burgers are spot on!

Starlight is a lovely, relaxing game that allows you to light up all of the stars in the sky. Around you, dim stars are dotted here and there. You must travel from star to star making them bright again. This is a simple task, though there are quite a few stars to light. You can zoom in and out of the map to see around you as you move if you want. As you travel, you will start to learn your own story. You are a spirit that people use to believe in but now they don’t believe that the stars are lit up by you. Someone out there does believe though, and they want to meet you. Its up to you if you want to meet them too, or, if you’d rather finish the job at hand. So travel, learn, and light up the night’s sky.

THE MORTAL is a challenging dungeon crawler where you are looking to destroy an Eternal god as a mortal. You are looking to prove yourself, though you have no grand power. Just a sword and a few attacks as you enter a slug filled area to find the powerful god to do battle with. As you venture around, you can break boxes and destroy slugs. Sometimes health potions are in boxes that are useful later. There are also statues of swords to help heal you, if you pray or rest by them. You only have one full life, once you die it is game over, so make sure you heal often. Soon you will reach the powerful god - which is when the greater challenge begins.

Lost Ethereal is a relaxing exploration game that has you helping giants while exploring a strange world. You are able to walk around a beautiful yet unique world full of blue dots and areas that you cannot quite get to yet. These dots can be collected as you walk. Puzzles will also pop up here and there, as well as ways to areas that you may not expect to go. These puzzles are done to allow you to help giants! There are many giants in this land, each with a big problem. Slugs may be all over them, or they could be very thirsty but unable to get water. You must use buttons to help the giants - who will then give you an item. These items will in turn help you get further in the world. Once you have explored the world and helped everyone you can, you can make it back to the start. This game is very interesting and fun to play, with some great atmospheric music.

Slumber Knight is an arcade game that has you jumping through the darkness and killing demons! You have been awoken from your sleep by a demon who then ate you. This caused you to appear in a strange area that has paths made of square tiles. You are only able to see the square directly in front of you or to the sides of you. You can jump on these squares but once you are on one, the one you left will fall into darkness. If you take a wrong turn and end up at a dead end, you will be forced to fall. You must look for demons and power ups in this strange place. Extra lives or upgrades to your sword will help you fight off demons. To face these monsters, you have to jump into the monsters mouths - starting a Flappy Bird style jumping game. Your sword will appear in their mouth - you must jump it up against the monsters gums to attack them, avoiding the teeth. It takes a few hits before you are able to kill them. Frog monsters are a bit different - they don’t have teeth but instead have a tongue that you can only see when the sword is near it. Kill off the demons and try to make it out alive!

Postal Panic is a fun, fast paced game where you must collect falling packages but avoid dangerous bombs! Your postal van crashed into a bomb van, causing a rain of both bombs and mail. You need to collect every piece of mail that’s falling while not getting hit by bombs. You only have three lives directly relating to mail - so if you miss three pieces of mail, you will have to restart. If you get hit by one bomb however, you will die and the game will also be over. This game is quite simple, but very well made. The different animations of the main character are skillfully done - added to addictive gameplay - this game is quite fun!

Voodoo Trump is a silly game about making fun of Donald Trump. Every letter on your keyboard does something to this US president candidate from changing what he looks like, his environment, or triggering cut scenes of him being destroyed. You can earn different achievements like “Accepting Diversity” and “Respecting China”. This game is a bit of a grab bag of looks and things that Trump is known for. You can have fun messing around with it and trying to find all of the secrets hidden in this game.

Beyond4096 has you playing a white dot that is looking to follow sound. There are hidden rainbow areas of the page that hold beautiful music. You must find this music and then chase the colors as they move across the screen. If you lose track of the colors, the words “Give Up?” will appear. The dot under the question mark will stay. If you run into it, it will shadow where the color is so you can find it once again. This color, when activated, moves fast so you must move fast on top of it. This game is quite tricky, but very fun to watch and listen too!

Aeonbot is a platformer that has you trying to escape loads of vines overgrowing the strange building you are in. These vines are growing quickly, so you must quickly push buttons and figure out how to leave the area. Each level has some blue areas that you cannot touch and some different colored walls that can be removed by pushing the same colored button. Soon you will also get rocket boots in each level to help you get up to higher places. There is a timer on the top of the screen, you must attempt to solve the level before the timer runs out. If you don’t, you will have to restart at the top - but all of the buttons you have pushed will remain pushed. If you aren’t fast enough at completely levels, the vines will catch up to you and you will be trapped. So be quick, and get through each level before you end up encased in nature’s vines.

Circle Pong is a challenging pong game that has you hitting the ball around a circle. There are three different modes to this game. One is a time mode where you must keep the ball from going out of the circle for the longest amount of time possible, earning a point for each second it is in the ring. Another is a coin grabber mode where you must aim the ball at coins that are appearing in the middle of the screen. Each coin is worth a point. Lastly, there is a block breaker mode where you must break loads of blocks in the middle of the screen while making sure the ball does not go off the screen. Each of these modes also have power ups that appear from time to time making the ball bigger or go faster. This game is quite simple, but a really nice twist on pong, and with three different modes it will challenge your skills for a fair amount of time!

The Beagle Jam is a suprisingly challenging platformer featuring the dog Snoopy. Snoopy is going on an adventure in his neighborhood. Around his area, there are many dangers - moving spikes, water holes, platforms that move across areas. If you die in any of the areas in the updated version, you can come back in that same level, so you do not have to redo all of the difficult levels before it again. Though this game is extremely challenging, it is a really nicely made retro game that will give you the joy of playing Snoopy on what feels like a Commodore 64.

Big Sword has you exploring a strange disturbance in a mysterious cave. With only your sword, you must look through the caves to find out what is causing this disturbance. What you will find is many, many strange monsters. These monsters will swipe, shoot, and attack you in every way possible to remove you from the cave. You must become a better fighter, using your sword and dash well, in order to dodge attacks and cut the monster’s back. You will find a hand full of mini bosses to defeat, each more visually interesting than the last. Don’t be afraid of falling deeper into the hole as more monsters wait down there to be slain. You only have a little bit of life, so make sure you kill before you are killed!

Boorglars is a platformer that has you guarding precious art in a museum. You are the night guard, armed only with your flashlight, who is in charge of watching the museum. One night, the lights suddenly go out. You know it is robbers looking to steal the works of art in this place. So you must chase them around and run into them before they escape with the art! You have a timer at the top of your screen and mini map at the bottom. This map shows you where you are and the robber is. Each robber has a set amount of time they need to get in and take the goods. You must run into them before that time runs out. The museum is dark and not very well planned out. There are dead ends, ladders leading to areas that are just out of reach, and long corridors. Be fast and protect the art from these thieves!

Umbri is a puzzle platfromer that has you changing the dark, demented ground into blooming normal trees and grass to keep the area alive. You are some sort of wizard, an illusionist, that is looking to fix the land and restore it to its proper state. You are able to do this by switching gravity around to allow you to walk on whatever land you choose. Sometimes when you fall, it is hard to pick a new angle and switch to it, but you must figure out a way to turn all of the ground from purple to green and luscious. Monsters start appearing in this world - bats that fly along a specific path, spiked balls that roll along the land, and flowers that eat you up in a single bite. If you die, you have to restart the level from the beginning. You will also be able to pick up shurikens to throw at the monsters to destroy them. It is up to you to restore the land of your world, at whatever the cost!
