The Ludum Dare 33 is a two part event; a Compo and a Jam. I played about 430 of over 2,725 games that were entered, in my YouTube video series. The theme for this Ludum Dare was “You Are the Monster.” Below are just some of my favorites out of the games I played, in a random order.
Note, this is the second part of this article. Part 1 includes 18 games as well. Below are 18 of my favorites, in a random order. Part 1 is here.
The Monster Inside is a charming film noir style audio-visual novella, where you are a detective. You are on the case of a string of murders, starting with a wealthy, politician’s wife. This case was brought to you by a young, beautiful girl who claims to be the mistress of this man. Using your special skills, like an amazing sense of smell, you must figure out what happened to the man. Each crime scene must be investigated for clues before you return to your home or office. Soon, more wives and mistresses of powerful men come up dead. You must continue to investigate, despite the pain in your head and bad dreams. Will you be able to figure out what caused all of these deaths?
SLIME TIME is a challenging arcade game that has you fighting off toxic ooze. You are a wealthy CEO, who just so happens to also have caused the worst toxic waste crisis of all time. Now, mutants and ooze have taken over the sewers. You must stop them before anyone finds out. Equipped with a laser jetpack, you must stay in the air between two sewer walls. As you fire lasers down into the goop - moving back and forth - you are able to shoot pots of ooze that fly upwards into the air. These ooze jars will then throw out splashback that will cause damage. As you continue to survive, more monsters will start to appear. Tunnels throwing out lines of slime will start appearing as well as slime monsters. Survive as long as you can and try to destroy the evidence.
BLACKFESK is a giant sea creature who is looking to destroy everything and reclaim the sea. You are this monster, roaming around the water, attacking the ships that come along. As you destroy ships, more powerful ships, submarines and even planes start to appear. You are stronger than them, so soon vikings and aliens come to try to kill you. The commander and his private both talk back and forth on the screen, trying to figure out how to destroy you. You can just continue going about your business, wrecking as much as you can, while the commander yells in anger at not being able to destroy you. Reclaim the ocean.
Earth Was a Bad Choice is about an alien who was just on holiday. You are an alien, you were looking for a great place to spend your holiday, so you have gone to Earth. It turns out, Earth’s inhabitants are quite hostile, so you must try to escape with your life! You do not plan on harming the Earthlings, but rather using them to get home. Cars, planes and even tanks are coming by trying to shoot you down. You must use these objects to juggle yourself into the air. When you are in the air, your energy will not go down. As you are walking along the road, you will however lose energy. If you run out of energy, you will be unable to move and die. Keeping your alien body in the air is quite fun - there are quite a few different breaks in the game allowing you to breath, but this challenging game is super fun to play.
Starvin’ Sasquatch is a super cute game about a Sasquatch just trying to get his next meal. Each day, the Sasquatch is in need of food, as any other creature would be. Sasquatches cannot just get food at a supermarket, instead they must forage for what they need. You must go to each camp, hiding from the different campers, and take some of the food you need. Each day you have a list of things. The foods on the list are exactly what you must take, nothing more, from the different campers. They have food inside of coolers or fridges inside cabins. You must take what you need before returning to the forest. Sometimes the list has a very specific purpose, like having a hot dog party. Make sure you have as much food as you need and don’t starve.
Monster Pizza has you delivering pizza as a giant T-rex. You have just gotten a job as a pizza delivery dino. You must grab a pizza from the pizza parlor and deliver it to the house that ordered it. You only have two small arms, so you can only carry one pizza at a time. Customers will get annoyed if you do not deliver a pizza in a timely manner and if you miss three orders, you will be fired. You can, however, run around the town. You must also not cause damage to the buildings and especially pizza parlors. If you do, it will come out of your paycheck. Watch out for cars, deliver and collect pizzas, and keep your awesome job.
Super Chop is a simple, adorable, infinite chopper where you chop down happy, smiling trees. Each day, you are able to go out and chop down smiling trees, seemingly happy to be turned into wood. To chop them, you must hit your spacebar as a small black bar is in the center of some rectangles. This black bar will move back and forth in the space, going faster when you hit it at the right time. Sometimes, these rectangles move, making it harder to hit back and forth. You only have a limited amount of time to spend hitting trees, so you must make the best of it. There is also a shop button in the game, though it is currently not being used. Hopefully, this shell of a game gets an update to include more cute things.
Martii the Rappasaur is a short, charming, runner where you have captured a princess. You are Martii, the rapping dinosaur, who is trying to impress his boss with his princess capturing skills. A super hero found out about him stealing the princess, so he is trying to chase him down. You must jump over spikes and holes, jump onto enemies for a boost, and keep moving quickly. One of the best things about this game is the music. Martii raps at the beginning of the game about his life story. It is really fun to listen to while playing the game. I would also recommend the browser version (which is made in Unity, so play it on Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox) as the graphics are a higher resolution and it is altogether better for gameplay.
A Heart Between Parts is a short point-and-click, where you are a scientific experiment. You are a monster, made by a man who was looking for a wife. You didn’t quite turn out right, instead being a mash-up of different people, ugly to anyone who sees you. Your creator - your father - has locked you up, hoping to get rid of you later. You must find a way out, all while discovering who or what you are! This game may be short, but it is quite fun to play. The graphics are also very well done.
Life Decisions is quite the simple looking game, made full of impact by the story. In this game, you are Stermon - a man with some decisions to make. You have only 100 dollars, though you can pick up some coins here and there to top up. Each screen has some decisions to make, whether it is some charity to donate to or some family stuff that needs doing. Sometimes, you have to avoid specific things or catch things, small mini games in between bigger decisions. Though the graphics and gameplay in this game are extremely simple, the decisions you have to make always have an outcome. These outcomes affect your family and yourself. The ending of this game has a big impact, and is well worth a play.
Three Bags Full is another game about making decisions. You are a mother of three children. Your husband was recently injured and cannot work. The only form of income you have for your family is a couple of sheep in your yard. These sheep must be sheared every day for an income. You can then spend the money you make at a market. Things like food, toys, better protection for your sheep and even more sheep can be bought. Each night, you must bring your family inside and eat dinner. They talk about their day and about seeing something in the woods. As time goes on, more sheep die, and you need to decide what child you leave out into the yard to watch the sheep. Your decisions affect the whole family. What are you going to do?
Germinis is a platformer that has you working for a circus, all while attached to your twin sister. You and your sister are siamese twins, the freak show act at a circus. You are the stronger sister, who can detach and reattach to your twin. You must push around boxes and solve puzzles, while leaving behind a twin when needed. You are unable to jump, due to being attached, so sometimes the slower sister needs to be left behind. After you complete a puzzle, you are able to walk along the tightrope to end your day. At the end of each day, you start to learn more and more about these sisters; why one is so sad, not wanting to be a freak. You can choose to comfort your sister, or fight with her. As each cutscene comes to an end, there is always another show to perform.
The Sacrifice is a management game where you are deciding what a town needs in order to survive the island’s harsh seasons. There are five noble families of the village, each must make their part of town carry out a task for the season. Tasks include foraging for food, building new homes, and evangelizing to the village so they believe strongly in the gods and are happy. Each season, you must pick what tasks different noble families perform. These tasks are crucial to the survival of the island, you must make sure that all of the different needs are filled. After each season’s tasks are completed, you must choose a person to sacrifice to the gods. This is a secret tradition of the nobles, make sure no one knows. For how long can you keep up this charade?
1-800-Monsters has you playing as Jimmy, ex-pyrotechnician, now birthday party entertainer extraordinaire. You dress up as a dragon, destroy castles, and entertain the lucky birthday people. Each level has you destroying some sort of castle. Sometimes, you need to push blocks into holes in the castle, so that the building will fall in one explosion of the barrel. Presents and balloons are dotted around some levels - you see, Jimmy sells old birthday presents to supplement his income. These items can be collected to add time onto the timer for the level. Sometimes, children might also appear inside the fenced area full of explosives. You will need to make sure they do not die in the explosions, or else you will lose and not be paid. This cute game is super fun to play.
Trouble in Monsterland has you attempting to claim back your land and save the stolen princess. The monsterland has been overrun with humans! These humans are a threat to your people and to your land. You must make them all disappear. Each area has a different group of humans, from nudists to businessmen, you must eliminate them all and collect the things they drop. Once humans are killed, they drop green slime balls and coins. These green slime balls will help you level up, so you can have more arms, feet, or even heads to help you out. The coins are used to respawn after you die, to the last flag that you have raised. Each area has a flag that can be raised once the humans have gone, so that they will not come back to the area. Claim back the land, find the princess, and laugh at the strange things these humans say.
Melody Muncher is a charming rhythm based game that has you playing a giant, man-eating flower! This flower is in danger of being cut down. You must eat, in rhythm to some awesome chiptune music, each person who tries to harm you. As you eat more people in a row, you will gain points for making a chain. These points will slowly fill up stars that will end up being the rating you receive for the level. You will soon get the hang of the game, then be introduced to a new tutorial showing you a new enemy. Some enemies, like knights and wizards, have to be hit twice. Other times, enemies can come at you from both sides, causing you to have to split in half. This game is super fun to play and listen to, with an amazing soundtrack to follow.
Combover Monster Campaign Monster is a fantastic sandbox action game that has you running Donald Trump’s current candidacy for president. Donald Trump doesn’t like losers and he expects you to win. On the left side of the screen, you can view the percentage of votes each candidate is receiving. There are a few people running for the Republican party, like yourself, so you must get at least 40% polling for yourself. You can gain votes by bumping into or throwing out angry tweets at red Republican signs. There are also blue Democrat signs, but these need some special help to get on your side. You must use your monster combover powers to stop and confuse signs voting Democrats. These signs will then die and come back as white signs. Once they are white, you can convert them with your own orange color. You can also use your wall-building skills to divide up the country or votes. Other candidates are also marching around the US, trying to convince others of votes. You must come out on top. This game is very well made with an amazing soundtrack of Donald Trump slow rapping phrases that he has said thus far.
