The One Game a Month is a monthly game dev challenge with an optional theme. This month’s optional theme was “Questgiver”. Many, many games are entered in the One Game a Month challenge every month. I decided to play all of the games that were entered in the month of December in my video compilation series.
Below are some of my favorites, in a random order.
Meteorite Rain is a simple but well made typing game. You are the planet Earth, who is being damaged by falling meteorites. These meteorites have a single three letter word on each one. You must type the word and hit enter to cause the meteorite to explode in a burst of color. If you are unable to type the word on a meteorite then the rock will hit the Earth, causing the Earth to take damage. This game is fairly straightforward, but is well done. Plus I really love typing games.
Crepes-Party-Hard-Yolo-Swag 2015 is a cute, simple game that has you playing as a fox who loves crepes. For whatever reason, you have stuck your crepes to the ceiling. You like your crepes there, so using your fancy french crepe pan, you bash those falling crepes back to their new homes. Sadly, gravity is against you. Quite quickly those crepes will start to peal back off the ceiling and fall towards you. Keep racing around the kitchen, hitting them back up without letting them touch the floor. Once they do hit the floor, you will lose a life. After three lives are lost, the game is over. You must score as many points as you can before all your crepes get dirty!
Bat Story is a short platformer about a vampire who is so old, he forgot what it was like outside the castle. Trapped indoors for too long, the vampire decided to go out and see what the world is like. The only thing stopping him is the guards in his castle. You can turn into a bat when needed which flies through the air, or be your vampire self and walk. As you make your way through the castle, walking into light will lead guards towards you. These guards will then assume you are a threat and try to destroy you with their swords. Use the light to your advantage and lead the guards away from you, so that you can fly out of there with dignity! There are also some extra lives dotted around a few levels, in case you need them. This game is fairly short, but the graphics are super nice and the gameplay fun.
Towers is an endless dungeon that may have a way out. You are in a dungeon full of monsters, chests, and NPCs. You can wander around aimlessly, opening chests and avoiding monsters, until you get bored or die. Floors go on and on, changing only the people you talk to and the placement of things. This is, until you figure out the secret to getting out. Once you have spoken to enough NPCs, they will give you a strange clue to leaving. You must use that clue to find the game itself, who will then batte you to let you go! This game is quite fun to play, whether it be battling the boss or just checking out what each level of the tower has to offer.
O is a super well made 3D puzzle game where you must move the peices around to free a yellow ring. A yellow ring sits inside a puzzle of nails, metal slats, and ringed things. You must click to move these puzzle bits around to free the ring. Once the ring is free, you can click on it to allow it to spin. These puzzle games remind me of the metal puzzle games that I use to have as a child. The level selection screen is also pretty cool - being a pillar covered in hexagons with different cubes on it representing numbers. If you are a fan of metal puzzle games, this version has quite a few levels to explore!
Kommissar is a strategy simulator about a world war, that is still in development. So far, we have quite the story about Europe going through a very long war. Everyone is fighting and breaking down with each other, so peacekeepers have been put in charge to keep everyone under the regime. You have been assigned as one of these peacekeepers, who is in charge of a few districts. You are able to warrant different orders to keep the peace. You can investigate a territory, put in more peacekeepers to enforce the peace, or arrest a trouble maker. It takes some investigating before you can accuse and arrest, but you can enforce the area at any time. After a while, some of the areas will rebel and you will not be in control of them. It is up to you to manage your territories and not allow them to go to war!
Lunar Defender by Christofer Styhre is not a real game. It is not here because it is one of the best games of the jam. It is here because it made me laugh and honored to have a game that spoke to me. I wanted to document the fact that a developer made a game, called it the worst game ever, then spoke to me specifically in it. If you are curious, take a look at this super short “game”. Who knows, maybe it will make you laugh too.
