The Oujevipo Contest #2 was a jam where developers were given the challenge to make games for kids aged 6-13 years old. There were also constraints that the developer must choose from; things like having 8 or more players, including adult topics, being inspired by a traditional children’s game, and many more. The top ten games, chosen by their jury, are going to be made into custom arcade cabinet games! There were many games entered in this jam, I recorded all of them in my video compilation series. Below are some of my favorites, in a random order.
Where Is Cat? is a hide-and-seek inspired game made by a parent and their kids. Most of the objects you will see in this game have been drawn by children! In this game you are looking for the cat in each picture. It seems as if you are chasing the cat from room to room, first out front, all the way to out back of your house. Once you locate your cat, you find that it is looking for more items. Once you find them all, you are in for quite the surprise! This game is cute and fun to play. The hand drawn graphics and art are very nicely made and add quite a bit to the game.
Bombe a Rebours is a local multiplayer with up to 26 players! Thats right, this game can successfully have 26 players on your keyboard - unless keyboard rollover prevents you from it. Each player picks one letter on the keyboard and clicks it. Clicking on the letter at any point it in the game, another player can join in. Once you have your letter, a ball will appear randomly in the arms of one player. This ball also has a count down above it. The ball must be thrown around by just clicking your letter as the arrow is pointed to the person you want to throw it too. The more players you have, the more balls appear. If the ball countdown hits zero, then the ball will die in a bit of smoke. If a player is holding it at the time, that player is also out. This game is simple but very fun to play with many people!
Loup is a game of tag, with a twist. In this game the tagger is a wolf. You must stay as close to the wolf without getting touched for the maximum number of points. Once you become the wolf, your time limit will start to decrease. You must tag another player before this timer runs out. This timer will then resume when you become the wolf once again. There are juice boxes dotted around the playing area. While in human form, you will be able to pick up these juices to boost your timer. If you hold down space you can tease the wolf for more points - but it will cost you time. This game is super adorable and very well made. Evade the wolf and last as long as you can!
Monster Academy is an adorable game full of minigames! You play as a new monster who is currently going to Monster Academy to become a proper monster. There are a few lessons a monster must learn at a young age in order to become a proper monster. These lessons include squashing a family of bugs, shooting down balloons, erasing a picture, and putting together a puzzle. Each of these lessons must be learned in only a few seconds, so be prepared to learn! After solving one of these mini games, you will get a score based on how well you learned. The monster will be happier if you do better, or sad if you do horribly. Help this monster learn all of the proper monster lessons quickly, so he can be happy!
Taiku is a beautiful game where you control a giant dragon head. You play as Mei, who is on a mission for the council. Her very first mission is to find a specific target building and destroy it. Inside the dragon there are many buttons and levers. One turns the dragon on, another lifts it up or down, a wheel that you must run on moves the dragon forward and backwards, a button pumps the fire and another one opens the dragon’s mouth so it breaths out fire. You may have to do a bit of running around the dragon head to use each thing, but that’s just part of the fun. Going through the village the villagers believe they are being attacked by a dragon, not someone inside a dragon doing the work of the council. There may be casualties, but you must do what the council has told you. Find the right building and burn it to the ground - all in the name of the council.
