The Stencyl Jam 17 was a game jam that challenged developers to use the Stencyl Engine to create a game. The theme of this jam was “Cold”. I was able to play and record all of the games entered into this jam in my video compilation series. Below are a few of my favorites, in no particular order.

Snow Globe is an adorable game that has you putting people back into their places inside a snow globe! Everyone in the snow globe village has been misplaced. You are required to shake the snow globe around in order to get the people back to their places. Shaking the snow globe one way will slowly pull the character in that direction. Each character has a specific place it needs to be, which are highlighted in green. These characters need to end up on the green area, orientated the correct way. Once one of them is safely in its place, you will get to see a little story of what they are doing in the village. In speed mode, you just need to put everyone in their place as fast as possible, skipping the story. Each of these characters can get caught on corners of the houses or the land, so you need to be careful when you move them.

Cold Burn is a survival game that has you risking your life to save your daughter. Your daughter is very sick, a shaman has come and told you that you need to collect three special ingredients to make a cure for her. Each of these ingredients are in a different part of your world - one in the forests, one in the mountains, and another in a cave. You must go through these different areas until you reach the end, coming to checkpoints with the option to visit home here and there. There are different things that you need to collect in each area to survive - wood to build items and to warm your family back home, and meat or hide to fuel your hunger and provide for your family. At the bottom of the screen you can see the status of your family back home and your character. They are counting on you - your daughter is getting sicker the longer you take - so be quick and watch out for problems such as wolves!

Love in Snowland is a challenging, icy platformer that has you trying to go after your love. Some villain has taken your love away! You must chase after them to get her back. As you go through levels, you will need to collect a crystal key to activate an end portal. This will bring you closer to finding your lost friend and to a new level. Some levels have evil snowmen or bits of the snowmen lurking around. Sometimes they shoot or try to run into you. You have the ability to shoot fire, so you can melt these guys away if you try. This attack won’t kill all the enemies, just the snowmen or cannons. There are also spikes and disappearing platforms in some levels, so timing is key. This game doesn’t have many levels, but each one is quite the challenge and fun to work through!

Endless Mountain is a skiing game that has you trying to rack up a high score! You are skiing down some slopes - a dangerous game when the area is full of trees! There are different flags to guide you around, you must be to the side the arrow points to when passing, or you will have to restart. Each time you pass the correct side of a flag, you will gain points. Scaring birds up in trees by going near them and making perfect turns will also help you acquire points. As you ski down the slope, you will find that this game glides well but is a challenge to master. You must time your movements perfectly, skiing well enough to stay alive and follow the directions of the flags. See how far down you can get in this tricky game!

Console Kid Cool Adventure is a rage inducing platformer that has you bringing a baby penguin back to its home! This game is divided into four levels, each one needs to be completed in a single run. Round penguins block the way, rolling into you and destroying you. Spikes and blocks that break away after touching it also dot the path. You are currently running forward automatically, but can jump, double jump, and change direction to get where you need to go. As you go through the level, you will find coins and the letters to spell out the word Cool. You can collect these things to get a better final score for the level, if you get to beat the level that is!
