Jam Favorites: Train Jam

Check out some games made while on a train!

The Train Jam was a game jam held on a train! The theme for this jam was Maximum Capacity. There were many games entered in this jam, I recorded all of them in my video compilation series. Below are some of my favorites, in a random order.

SWOLE CALIBER has you playing different minigames to get buff! You are a snake who is looking to beef up. There is lots of stuff that a snake needs to do in order to become the muscle man. He must eat up tons of flakes, pose his amazing arms to gain some charm, work on the firmness of his legs, rest up a bit (can’t overwork yourself) and lift weights of course. Each of these minigames have their own scores, showing you how well you have done and what you need to work on. This game is quite funny to look at - a wacky snake full of muscles - but is currently being updated to have more “playability”. SWOLE CALIBER can be played currently, though sometimes it does bug out and need to be reset.

Statuesque is a very interesting narrative about a person from New York who is taking part in the Train Jam. This person doesn’t care for New York City - with its puzzling blocked off areas - crushing the hopes and dreams of people around it - and its greed for money everywhere you go… Chicago is set up like New York, but somehow better. This person came from Boston, not like either of the two. During the train ride, they took pictures of the scenery going by. You can explore some of these pictures and read what this person was going through or thinking. It is quite interesting how they feel about the experience and the game - it’s nice to be able to take a look into someone else’s mind while they are doing the jam.

CatSet is a cute little cat matching game that has you helping the cats get new homes. You are currently running out of room at your cat orphanage. You must sort your cats into little groups of three so that they can play together and hopefully get adopted! These cats, however, must all have something in common. Some cats have a different background, mark on the face, or different color fur. As long as all of the cats have one of the same quality (and the rest of the qualities are different) or have all the same qualities, they will get along. If one of the cats is different (yet the other two cats share a quality the different one does not), than the other cats will pick on them, and the group will be disbanded and put back in your orphanage at the bottom of the screen. You do not want to keep cats in your orphanage, as more cards (with cats) flip over after a set amount of time. Once the orphanage is full, the next cat will be unable to come home and you will lose. Keep the cats organized so they can be adopted and go to a home!

Max Capacitor is a super challenging 3D puzzle game that requires you to connect and push cylinders to get to the next level. In each level you must push cylinders full of light onto buttons to open up doors. These buttons can only be activated with cylinders full of light, so you must make sure the cylinders you need to activate the door are lit. There are two ways to fill them full of light; connecting the dark ones to light ones, or pushing them in front of lasers. If you are connecting cylinders, you will soon realise that once they are connected you cannot pull them back apart. This is sometimes helpful when it comes to getting cylinders out of tight spots but can add some challenge if you connect them the wrong way. If at any point you mess up (and trust me, you will) you can hit ‘Z’ to undo a single move. This game gets challenging quite fast, so just remember what it told you at the beginning, the game does believe in you!

Train Jam Simulator 2k16 allows you to become a Train Jam participant on the Train Jam! In this management-style typing game, you must type the words on your computer screen to program your computer, while talking to various game developers on the train. The creators of this game took all of the pictures, sound, and stories from actual things that happened on the train. They interviewed developers, so that all of the conversations you are having with developers are similar to the ones you would have had if you were on the train jam! You have the chance to network, make friends, and even get people to join your team to create a game. While talking an typing, you must manage your power outlets. Your phone and computer battery cannot die - so you must make sure to plug them in if they are low on charge. On the other hand, if you start getting more team members, you will soon find that having all of these items plugged in will cause a power outage. Be careful what you have plugged in and enjoy the Train Jam experience!

Capacity is a short game about a girl and her love, who live with a curse. You are on a quest through a castle to lift a curse from your loved one. He says he loves you, he says he needs you to do this, but is risking your life worth it? Your love claims that he has a curse on him and his family; that is why he is horrible to you. Once the curse is lifted, he thinks that he will be able to love you. You must work your way through the castle, speaking to demons as you get deeper and deeper. These demons question your love’s motivations. They wonder why you have gone this far. Every few levels of the castle will show you memories from your path so you can understand more about what is going on. It is up to you - is love worth it?

Discharge has you playing sd Maxine, a women with a terrible husband. You work at a power company, supplying your husband’s office with enough power to work the electric devices each and every day. Today you have gone into work while everyone else is out, in order to make a bit of a mess in the office and get something that belongs to you. As it turns out, your husband isn’t too nice to you. In each room, you are given a bit of story about your life. It is up to you to decide how you will look at things. Will you see that Dean is a bit of a jerk or will you keep your rose-tinted glasses on and believe he is a saint? You must use an electricity gun to throw bits of electricity to checkpoints in the wall. These points will then start to drain as they use the battery. You must figure out which ones to use to go through doors and get to the next area. Some areas require a few different points to be activated before you can go in. You must figure out what to do about Dean, as your life is turning out to be more work than you planned…

L4z0r 54mur41 is a cool twist on a bullet hell game. You are playing a really neat ship that looks like it is made of light called Laser Samurai starship. There are lots of ships coming in and shooting at you, but you do not have bullets. So you must use your beam of light to deflect enemy bullets back at their ships. These bullets are not very easy to deflect, as your light beam moves around in the general area you aim it, sometimes allowing enemy bullets to get through. You do have many shields to help protect you, but once you run out you will die. This game is quite a challenge and added with the lighting effect makes it quite interesting to play.
