I tried to ensure that if a player makes a mistake the design doesn't instantly fail the player, in some circumstances they can recover with skill

The idea with the unlockable boats is to show of your characters in-game, instead of them vanishing in to a menu system to be forgotten!
Here is a quick video of the general mechanic, navigate the obstacle, smash the crystal beam above and grab the gems
