Here's how to play and win in ToruTaru.
Locked Doors
You will find big brown doors inside the mansion which are locked. For each one there is a golden key somewhere which will unlock it. This will take you to the next floor, and lock out any spirits chasing you.
Side Quests
You will find "people" inside the mansion. Some of them may ask you to help them, some of them may not. If you help them, they will thank you. Sometimes they will thank you by giving you advice, or reading your fortune, but sometimes they will thank you with helpful items. Some of the items they give you can't be found anywhere else, so help people when you can.
Talismans
You will find talismans all over the mansion. You can only carry one at a time, but you can carry them between floors and save them for the right moment. Each one has either a "P", "d", or "N" inscribed on it. Here's what each one does:
P: Protection talisman. When dropped, creates a holy snow which protects you from spirits. Wherever you see the snow, they will not go. Use it to create a safe space from spirits, or put some distance between you and a pursuer. Lasts 30 seconds.
d: Dispel talisman. For two seconds after you plant it, the dispel talisman charges up and releases holy energy, dispelling any evil spirits nearby.
N: Travel talisman. This talisman when used will teleport you to the next floor. Very useful for getting out of tight spots, or for just skipping a floor you're tired of.
Blessed Rooms
You will find rooms in the mansion which are heavily blessed by talismans. Spirits cannot enter this room, allowing you some safe haven from their influence. In addition to this protection, you can usually find a couple of talismans for your own use laying about on the floor. Blessed rooms emit a low sound which can be heard from a short distance away, so listen for that sound when you need some cover.
Dying
As you progress through the mansion, several entities will follow you. The amount of their heavy influence on the environment will begin to impact you as that influence becomes greater.
When the influence is quite great, you will see that your vision is a little blurred, and you can hear a buzzing sound in your ears. When the influence is far too much, you will see great visual distortion, and hear terrible sounds. If you do not leave the area quickly when either of these things are happening, you will surely soon die.
Fully Random
Everything in ToruTaru is randomly generated - the map, the spirits, the quests (and each step of their dialogue), the items, the puzzles, the solutions, all completely random. This means that sometimes the mansion will be very generous giving you many items and blessings, and sometimes the mansion will be quite cruel forcing you through dangerous areas for little to no reward. Sometimes unusual or impossible things will happen. This is the joy of exploring the mansion, that you have no control, and you live in a world of its making. Some floors are enormous and open, some are claustrophobic and small, some have a hundred rooms, some have one. Below are some example maps which have generated.
Enjoy
The point of anything is to be fully there and enjoy yourself. Take your time in the mansion and soak up its horrible energy. Have a nice day.
