This is a game that conflicts me about how to review it.
In the first place it's just a platformer in the typical style like there are many in the DOS time. The controls are pretty basic for the time.
The game did most of all remind me of Jill of the Jungle. I wasn't too far off. Truth is that it was meant to be the successor of Jill of the Jungle... Jill of the Jungle II so to speak. However some setbacks slowed the production down, and it did not meet the quality standards Epic set up, and as a result they rejected it. Not to mention Epic Megagames was already in the middle of the development of Jazz Jackrabbit, which *is* better on nearly all fronts, I must be honest there, and they expected a lot more from Jazz Jackrabbit, and well Jazz Jackrabbit did in the end live up to that... I'll go into the deep of Jazz Jackrabbit when I review that specific game.
The game was hence renamed Vinyl, since Jill of the Jungle was a protected name. They attracted a model for the pinup in the main menu (who doesn't really look like her in-game counterpart... figures) and so the game could be released anyway.
If you seek a really original game, you should not pick out this title (but then again, question is then if you should be looking at a reviewing blog about old classic games in the first place), but yet Vinyl is not really a terrible game. The game is still pretty enjoyable and at some points even challenging.
Technically you play many levels connected with a topdown view world map, like we also see in the Commander Keen series. Overall the controls are smooth, although the game easily lags when too many processes take place at once, and as levels get more and more complex as you progress this can happen easily. The game does feature many enemies and weapons to beat them with, and the level design has been thought through.
Weapons can include knives you can through, shurikens, fireballs, and well, there is a lot, actually. Nearly everything can be destroyed, even the projectiles enemies fire at you, and that's something I don't see so often. You got unlimited lives, which makes that you don't have to worry about a game over, which works rather player friendly. The game does not feature boss enemies... if that's a good or a bad thing is up to you, but I always miss something without a boss.
The game does work pretty well in DOSBox.. The lags I mentioned, do happen in DOSBox, but they already were an issue on real DOS computers, so you can't blame DOSBox for that one. On Moby Games you can still obtain the game https://www.mobygames.com/game/vinyl-goddess-from-mars however, this game is not free...
Personally I like Jill better, but Vinyl is still pretty enjoyable, and does work out.
