Description:
Developed as a single-player computer game, The Cave hybridises games design and drawing through comic book language to manipulate the user into an absurdist story unconcerned with the legitimacy of a conclusion.

Storytelling functions as a representation of the world around us through the remediation of the oral archetypes of mythology. If mythology helps to understand the present, by looking to the past - its power lies in an assumption that it holds ultimate truths. Within a heteropatriarchy, the supposition that heterosexuality is normative and reproduction is an expectation is deeply embedded into the fabric of society through patriarchal mythologies perpetuated through the praxis of storytelling.

The Cave mimics that of the female reproductive organ, exaggerating the patriarchal mythology of the Vagina Dentata into a weaving canyon that cultimates at a dark cave. Entering this spatio-temporal encounter, the user appears to navigate only to find they are trapped in the cycle of the game.

At the deepest point of this cave lies a chained wolf, presenting a metaphor for mortality bound to a perpetual cycle of grotesque rebirth. Through horror aesthetics, The Cave aims to render the metaphors underlying patriarchal mythologies found in screen media transparent; to represent but not return the fantasy of reproductive necessity to the user. #horror #queer #disability #art #comics #comicbook #animals #wolf #unity #fineart #contemporaryart
