It's Halloween! let's talk about SCARE.

One of the single best decisions I made with INSECTILE was to make SCARE deal damage after an enemy is already SCARED. This makes getting high combos easier and WAY more satisfying!

In the prototype, SCARE only halved defense. It NEVER dealt damage. It was NOT fun : ( It felt like you were “wasting” turns to place SCARE tiles when you could’ve just damaged twice in that time.

It also seriously helps now that SCARE doubles damage. SCARE used to raise damage by a much smaller amount (~25%) that stacked with each usage. In theory this sounds awesome because stacking it many times means high high HIGH damage!

HOWEVER, I think it clashed really poorly with the puzzle-focused battle design (which is much more fun in short bursts, not long battles).

Not to mention it made the mental math much harder. Maybe I’m a dork, but I like adding up my attacks in my head : )

I know this is quite different from my normal posts - let me know what you thought about it!

Anyways, be safe and happy Trick-or-Treating! After filling up on candy, why not give the INSECTILE demo a try on Steam?!?

Long-time fans will remember this tricky Insectile - I've circled back around to make her path finding even smarter!

I think it'll be a super fun break in exploration to avoid some flying stingers! 🐝

I was worried the "blockers" in INSECTILE would annoy players - but many cited them as the best parts of the demo!

So, I'm working on new blocker types today : ) Bees leave honey splotches and water skimmers have armor that pops like bubble wrap!

Okay, I do a color sketch for every INSECTILE before I commit to its design. I normally don't share them but LOOK AT HOW THE EARTHWORM TURNED OUT! DONUT!

The Assassin Caterpillars!🐛

"But they're so cute I want to pet them..." DON'T! Touching their needles does 1 damage! Ouch!

Over half of all INSECTILE wish lists were added in the last month. I could not be more grateful!

If you're an indie dev or any kind of creative - do not be discouraged!

I know scorpions aren't *quite* insects, but I am willing to make an exception for a super interesting shape. You also need a good mischievous-looking guy in a creature collector sometimes.

What other kinds of bugs should I add?

Happy #WIPWednesday! Are you working on a game? Making some art? Practicing a song? Something else? Tell us in the comments!

Fun Fact: In a few mantis species, the female will sometimes eat the head of her partner when mating.

Lesser Known Fact: This gives the male mantis a more optimal attack formation.
