Hey!
This is LOBERTALE's first official devlog!
We have a lot of exciting news we were able to cook up for you guys, but first we should introduce the new folks (which is a lot of you) to the AU!
Nothing quite like it has been done before, so hopefully we can catch you up to speed!
What is LOBERTALE?
LOBERTALE is a reimagining of Undertale, with:
An entirely new cast
New areas, and fresh takes on existing ones
New and improved upon existing gameplay
Original story, based on Undertale's
Talking mirrors, strange pineapples and birds, oh my!
LOBERTALE started off as a self insert AU, all that time ago (a full year now!), but its turned into a fully original game.
Our team is small, 5 main members (Cali, Portel, M1seryF0nt, Demoo, and Connor/Shoe), with two others who stick around to pitch in every once in a while (Mimer12345690 and Neo Champion), but we aim to make a full game, longer than Undertale, that gives LOBERTALE the ending it deserves.
With that out of the way, let's talk about the progress!
New Gameplay Mechanics
Oh boy, there's a lot.
First off - we changed up how soul traits will work.
We decided to throw away the color system used in, what, every fangame ever? For a more original spin on things.
Souls are now divided into the four card suits:
Hearts: Very caring humans/monsters who will always be glad to help those around them. Typically cooks, nurses, doctors, etc.
Diamonds: Brilliant humans/monsters that find unique ways to benefit those around them. Usually inventors, scientists, etc.
Clubs: These humans/monsters are usually found doing the heavy lifting - and in combat. Often blacksmiths, construction workers, etc.
Spades: Humans/Monsters who are naturally gifted in combat, and will protect their allies.. for better or for worse. Typically warriors, and also great leaders.
These new traits apply to humans AND monsters - here are what these souls will look like:
At the beginning of the game, you will choose one of these four, based on your strategy.
Speaking of strategy...
Next, we changed up how attacks will work!
Now you will have a maximum of three attacks at a time, and attacks will have one of two suits:
Club attacks are physical, like punches (or bites if you're feeling feisty).
Spade attacks usually have a weapon involved.
There's also a few interesting quirks to this new mechanic:
Some attacks wont work on some monsters, like punching a fire monster will give you recoil damage!
Club attacks are also stronger against Spade and Diamond souls, and Spade attacks are stronger against Heart and Club souls.
Club and Spade souls will be better attackers than Heart or Diamond souls.
This will hopefully spice things up, and add in some strategy!
But what about Heart and Diamonds, you ask? Don't worry!
We have re-introduced the SPELL button that can be found in Undertale's files!
You will have a maximum of three spells at a time, and they will have one of two suits:
Heart spells give you or a member of your party a buff, be it healing or stat boosts.
Diamond spells will debuff one or more foes, with stat decreases or status effects.
These have similar quirks to the attack system:
Heart and Spade souls will be more efficient spell casters.
Some monsters may be immune to some status effects, like if you tried to freeze an ice monster (or something, we don't have all that worked out yet).
And yes, we have re-introduced party members! At several points in the game you will be able to make and lose party members, and they can help you out immensely!
Last thing, I promise...
We have made some changes to gaining EXP!
you now get EXP for all (and we mean ALL, there's tons) not-so-nice actions.
Attacking monsters will give small amounts of EXP.
Killing monsters will give a larger amount of EXP.
Remember those funny rude options in Undertale? Those can give EXP if rude enough, now.
And many, many, many more specific instances.
LV remains the same, but it will likely be harder to increase (we think).
New Areas
We have two new areas to show off in this devlog!
The Border
When you fall into the underground, there is a border filled with puzzles, traps and guards to stop any human from proceeding into the underground.
This is where you will be introduced to many gameplay mechanics mentioned above!
Here are a few tiles we have laying around - these may or may not be changed in the future!
New Vale
This city is home to a large population of monsters, and there will be a LOT to do here!
We have plans for:
Minibosses
Side quests
Mass murder
Many items and new junk to collect
And more!
The city will be heavily inspired by Venice, Italy.
There will be canals instead of roads, and maybe some interesting encounters!
New Cast Members
We have three new characters to reveal today, but there are several more that aren't quite ready to show off at the moment.
None of the following sprites are final, and may see some changes in the future!
Dae
Dae will be LOBERTALE's new protagonist!
We didn't want to use Frisk, so Cali and Portel came up with this sprite!
(Frisk by Portel, Dae 1 and 2 by Cali, Dae 3 by Portel (minor edits by Cali))
As for the walking animations...
Don't worry, Cali has it under control(???)
Flames
This is Flames, who is Flowey's counterpart!
This rascal will either help or hinder you, depending on your actions.
He will teach you all about the new battle mechanics, and will even join your party for some time! (Not very long)
Why is he gray? I dunno, its probably important or something.
Caldi
Finally, we have Caldi, who will be replacing Toriel!
She is a motherly fire monster who will guide you through the Border, to her home in New Valle.
She will introduce you to most new gameplay features, and teach you what's up with all those traps and puzzles!
More will be explained about these characters as we write the story! We're hard at work on it, don't worry!
Oh, and there's also Quaker and Jay, but don't worry about them. (For now)
Well, that's all we have for our first devlog!
You can come join the Discord and ask some questions, if you'd like! (discord.gg/Zs3XEZD)
Hope you like what we have so far, there's plenty more to come!
