Under 12 hours until the first episode of the Ranma 1/2 remake first airs on Japan at 12:55 AM JST and it will become globally available on Netflix right after it airs! As commemoration, I have decided to post this piece that I made in early September about my favourite character from the series, Ryoga Hibiki.
I had planed to draw more Ranma fanart throughout September as a way to "advertise" the series, but I kinda didn't have enough time to draw everyday so I only did that and an incomplete sketch of another drawing I was planning.
Ryoga was my favourite character for me because his interactions with Akane were really cute and funny, and I always rooted for him to get her even though it was sometimes frustrating how everything he did went wrong for him. But stuff kinda start going better for him in a way during the last 4 or 3 volumes of the manga and I was happy about that! :D
What is Ranma 1/2?
Ranma 1/2 is a late '80s and '90s martial arts and romcom manga and anime series by Rumiko Takahashi (mangaka behind Urusei Yatsura, Maison Ikkoku, InuYasha, etc.) about the narcissist, tactless yet loveable 16 year old boy Ranma Saotome, wielder of a curse that makes him turn into a girl when exposed to cold water and back into a boy when exposed to hot water. His stupid father has arranged a marriage with his stupid friend's daughter, 16 year old Akane Tendo, and Hilarity Ensues from then on. Throughout the series, Ranma meets other characters who also wield transformation curses (mostly funny animals for gags), chasing him for his past or because of love rivalry around him, Akane, or any other character; and meets a couple more girls who he and his stupid dad made compromises with, intentional or not (and also one girl who is just obsessed with him and I hate her, barely avoiding yandere territory). The series also makes up bizarre martial arts fighting styles.
Due to being an old series, it is kind of dated, but I hope that those who are interested can still appreciate it for what it was back then and hopefully you will love it. I should also warn that the series has quite some casual but not really sexualised nudity, in case a potential reader or watcher feels uncomfortable when watching something like that.
This manga actually has two anime adaptations: the first was back in the '90s, had a few re-ordered arcs and only adapted up to the first half of the manga; and the second is the new one starting within the next 10 hours from the moment I post this and is expected to be more faithful to the manga and adapt it until the very end.
