So today marks the 10th anniversary of one of my all-time favorite games and the one that changed my life for the better - Undertale. I want to wish the author, the game Toby Fox, and the entire fandom all the best and thank you all for being there!

I've been with you since 2019 and I have a long story connected to it, but more on that later. In addition to the first art, I decided to dig up my old art from those years.

The community that this game has gathered around itself is truly one of the most creative and unusual that there are, because people create a lot of art, comics, music, fan games, animations and much, much more, and not limiting themselves to the original universe, but also creating AUs that I have not seen in any other fandom, and someone goes even further and, inspired by this game, creates something of their own and completely separate, although similar, like me, for example.

Now a personal story

I found out about this game in the end of 2015, when I was checking the channel of one of my favorite let's players (Windy 31), as well as channels on modeling from polymer clay (I was also doing this back then). The only characters I knew were Frisk, Sans and Papyrus, and before I decided to fully get acquainted with the game, I thought that all three of them were the main ones, but then it turned out that they were not, but one way or another, I put off my acquaintance with this game for a very long time. I put it off until 2018, when, in addition to celebrating Halloween, I discovered another game by Toby Fox - Deltarune, on the day of its release. Everyone called it Undertale 2 at that time, and I realized that I knew nothing about Undertale and I had to get acquainted, but I completed Deltarune first, and over time, everyone began to talk more about the fact that this game is only indirectly related to Undertale.

At that time, I did not have a good laptop, I had (and still have) a PS4, on which I completed Deltarune for the first time, since Chapter 1 was free. I did not buy games in the PS Store, I always bought games on discs.

But then, the beginning of changes comes for me, I really remember that time. February 20-23, 2019, I dug up an old laptop with Windows XP, 2001, which booted up in 2 minutes and did not pull any of the new games, but this did not stop me from deciding to launch Undertale on this waffle iron, and what do you think? It worked! And now we move on to the game itself.

Personally, I think it needs no introduction, so I'll go straight to my memories. I primarily play any video games because they attract me with their atmosphere, style and gameplay, but in the case of Undertale, I really appreciated the plot. It is so simple and naive in this game, but at the same time so well-developed and touching with its twists, some of which, among other things, happen because of you, the player. I had heard a lot about breaking the 4th wall before, but here in addition to this, the game remembers your actions and even when you try to reset it, you find that for some reason you can't change the name you chose, but that's not so bad, then Flowey starts telling you that you've already been through this, only this time you spared Toriel, but he remembers that you killed her in the previous timeline...

...

This literally made 10-year-old me drop my jaw. There's nothing to add or subtract, I still applaud standing up, and after that I've only seen something like this in Doki Doki, but I was already aware that this game is a horror and I didn't experience the same effect as I did in Undertale.

The atmosphere in this game doesn't seem to be anything completely new, in this regard I liked the atmosphere from Deltarune much more, but in Undertale it's very cozy and it's very well complemented by the narrative, characters, their motivations and music, speaking of which...

The music in this game has 100% been heard by everyone, even those who know nothing about Undertale and are generally far from the video game industry, its soundtrack is considered one of the best, and it is not surprising, because Toby Fox is a musician by education, and he definitely knows how to write masterpieces and he successfully continued his work in his next games, as well as projects of some other developers.

As for the style, at one time many criticized this game for its graphics. Personally, I never cared about graphics in games, especially since I myself, when I was little, played many browser games that looked the same, and I still like this style. And in Undertale, it had a special vibe of this simplicity, but at the same time beauty. And then I got to the battle with Omega Flowey and my jaw dropped from the fact that it consisted of PNG pictures, not pixel sprites. In general, I really like the combination of styles in animation, films and games, especially the combination of something realistic with hyper-drawn and drawn, because it causes an effect of alienation, sometimes very pleasant, by the way.

Well, the gameplay also caught me with its variability and the ability to spare monsters, which will affect the ending. When I completed the game to the true pacifist ending, thanks to the plot and the fact that all your actions are remembered, I was very happy with the result, but at the same time I was very sad when I re-entered the game and Flowey said that I could do a full reset to try to complete the game as the first time. This was the first time in my life when deep down I wanted to erase my memory to try it again and experience these indescribable emotions once again.

But in any case, you can feel slightly new emotions by watching something from fans, and there was a lot of such creativity. I liked many AUs, fan games with battles with both familiar characters and with someone completely different, as well as attempts at prequels and sequels (Uppertale or Undertale: Don't Forget), and this was long before Undertale Yellow. But many of these games remained unfinished, and some still remain. But their trouble is also that because of this, they do not have those features that touched me in the original. But in any case, I was glad to get acquainted with your work. I was also very inspired by the many remixes and crafts that fans made (I am very sad that now the latter is sorely lacking not only in UT and DR, but also in many other fandoms, but I would be very glad to see something in the style of YouTubers like BudgetHobby, Roart, LoreChirik or GiovyHobby again)

But besides everything else, this game and its fandom inspired me to do something similar in spirit, but with my own vision of many moments. I loved to come up with stories with different characters in school and adolescence, but after Undertale, I also began to come up with my own characters and stories with them. And at some point, from such stories, the idea of my game was born, which some may now know as Normenhill. But now let's summarize this scribbling from me.

Now pretty much everyone agrees that Undertale is an absolute masterpiece, but unfortunately, many fans have forgotten the original essence of the key characters. I myself managed to catch the times when some said Undertale was overrated, but I disagree. As for me, the game fully deserves everything it has and some fandom problems will not necessarily harm it. And in any case, there are fans just like me, and it doesn't matter how many there are, but the fact that they exist makes me happy. Toby himself initially positioned this game as a project in the spirit of EarthBound, which would primarily appeal to fans of THIS game, and in the end it got its own fans, but despite this, the EarthBound fandom also grew significantly thanks to them.

Once again, a huge thank you to Toby and the Fandom, you are awesome! Stay determinated and here are my favorite remixes, even if you've heard them before, it's worth doing it again, on such a sunny day outside (and even if you don't have the sun, this music will warm your soul.) 🎶🎧🎵
