Bruno is obviously the protag of Lament, and his story is far more in depth this time. Bruno lived a majority of his life in France with his family, consisting of his mom, dad, big brother, and little sister.
When Bruno reached young adulthood however, a war sparked between the Mushroom Kingdom and the Bean Kingdom. Bruno ended up volunteering, wanting to help. Initially he was under the assumption that he would serve food to the soldiers or help in medicine.
When he arrived to the Mushroom Kingdom however, he found that he would be fighting on the front lines, against his wishes.
Regardless, he tried to make do with it, even if it would be difficult to put it lightly. During the war, he met two important people in his life, a father of two named Marcus, or better known under his nickname, Jumpman.
And an Irish man named Thomas. The three formed a bond during the war and played cards with each other in their spare time, talking about the lives awaiting them back home. Bruno and Thomas soon found however that Jumpman was not as innocent as he seemed.
He was working for the Bean Kingdom, letting them into inaccessible parts of the battleground and giving them top secret information, all so he could have a better chance at surviving the war.
When Bruno discovered this, the two got in a struggle, with Bruno ultimately shooting Jumpman and leaving him dead bellow in a trench.
Thomas too died during the war, getting sniped in the head by an enemy solider. Before he kicked the bucket however, he gave Bruno a knife during combat, something Bruno would bring home with him in the form of a memory of Thomas.
When Bruno did arrive home however, he found that the conflict had spread to France, and his family was killed in the process. After mourning their deaths and hosting funerals for them, he decided to go back to the Mushroom Kingdom after the war had ended.
Bruno's home was destroyed and a financial crisis had sparked, leading Bruno to seeking a new city, New Donk. There he met a waitress at the Scuttlebug Cafe, Dolores, his future wife.
After the two sparked a relationship, they eventually got married a year after, having their daughter later on, Eveline. Life for the happy family was initially perfect, however, Bruno had some internal problems.
Trauma from the war, the loss of his family, PTSD and a strong gambling and alcohol addiction. Dolores did her best to help him, even if it didn't work all the time. Regardless of the problems though, the couples relationship remained healthy, and life was going well.
That was, until Eveline got cancer. Thankfully the doctors caught it in it's early stage, however, the treatment to heal her was too expensive. In a panic, the couple tried saving up money in different ways to help their sick daughter.
And while Dolores worked her hardest to get the money from her jobs, Bruno meanwhile turned to a casino, hoping to strike a jackpot and get the money on his own. This of course didn't pan out as he'd like, and his family's money was lost.
Dolores and Bruno got in a fight, eventually leading to Bruno getting kicked out. Heartbroken, yet determined to save Eve though, he set out to find another way to get the money, and he soon found it.
In the local paper, he saw an interview with the owner of a popular fast food brand, Wario. He talked about how he and his brother had their family cookbook and the burger recipe inside was a main factor in their success.
Bruno also soon heard that the recipe was kept inside Wario's factory near the center of New Donk City. And so, Bruno formed a plan, later breaking inside the cellar of the factory late one night.
Inside he found a costume for the factory's mascot, Wario Man. Bruno decided to wear it to hide his identity, it was better than the ski mask he was wearing anyway. He searched the factory from top to bottom, leaving no stone unturned as he looked for his ticket to save his daughter.
However, Bruno was soon found by someone, the very tired, angry owner of the factory who shined a light down on the intruder. The light however triggered something in Bruno, a flashback, to the war where he in a similar circumstance was spotted by a Bean solider with a lantern.
This caused Bruno to instinctively attack, grabbing a nearby packaging knife and stabbing Wario with it, brutalizing him. This commotion caused Wario's employees to find what had happened. Bruno unfortunately was still in his flashback, causing him to attack and kill them as well.
After finishing off the rest off the workers, Bruno noticed two people that were there before had gone missing, Luigi and Mario. He searched the factory for them, eventually finding their bodies in the boiler room, with Mario being disfigured in the face and Luigi hanging by a noose.
Bruno didn't do this, and thus, the shock caused him to finally snap out of his flashback.
Distraught at what he had done, he broke down on the floor, crying over the deaths he had brought to all those innocent people. As he was lost in thought however, a part of his brain told him something.
"Now that everyone's dead, you can find the recipe without a problem and save Eve".
Initially he rejected this idea, however, after further thought he realized. If he was arrested and sentenced without selling the recipe and getting the money, Eve would die from the cancer.
And so, he reluctantly continued his search, eventually finding the recipe inside a safe hidden behind a painting in Wario's office. Thankfully Bruno managed to break the safe open with a hammer. Before he left though, he wiped the security camera's recorded video and burned his costume in a nearby furnace before fleeing and later selling the recipe on the blackmarket.
With the money, not only did Bruno manage to save Eve, but they also could afford a new house. Things weren't perfect still of course, as Bruno and Dolores later got a divorce, but even still, they shared custody, still keeping a calm relationship even past everything that had happened.
Life was perfect once again. That remained true until one night. Bruno awoke to the sight of someone looming over his bed, Wario. Despite what Bruno believed, Wario hadn't died. He had survived the massacre and later awoke in a hospital.
That was the only good news for him, as he soon found that not only was he being blamed for the deaths, but that he was also losing his factory. Thankfully he was never convicted for the murders and proved his innocence in court, however, his life was still ruined.
His brother and friends were dead, and he lost his business. All Wario could think about then was revenge. He later tracked down Bruno's whereabouts and tried to shoot him in his home. Bruno awoke just as Wario was about to pull the trigger though, causing a fight to break out.
As the two struggled in the living room, the noise awoke Eve, causing her to walk inside to see what was going on. Wario spotted her, causing him to freeze up. He didn't know about Bruno's daughter, and the guilt of what he was going to do shook him.
He was going to do the exact same thing Bruno had done to him. As he stood their frozen though, Bruno tackled him, causing Wario to accidently fire his gun off. The shot unfortunately hit Eve though, causing her to fall to the floor, dead. As Bruno franticlly tried to save his dying daughter, Wario approached from behind, attempting to help.
Before he could however, Bruno lunged at him, attacking him with complete rage. In this moment, Bruno brutalized and killed him, leaving him a mangled husk on the ground. Police soon arrived after neighbors reported gun fire. Bruno was never convicted for the murder as the court saw it as a crime of passion over the death of his daughter.
Even then, Bruno's life was ruined, just as he did to Wario's. In this time, Bruno tried to find a way to undo his actions. This lead him to finding something at a flea market, a book. One that had been used by a witch coven for generations. Bruno found a spell inside that would summon a demon that could grant any wish the caster desired.
It was a longshot, but Bruno replicated the ritual in the book and summoned Emma. Emma agreed to grant Bruno's wish, but on one condition. He would need to spend five days inside a location from his past where he would face the ramifications of his actions.
Bruno accepted the terms, and thus.
Lament began.
