As I’ve hinted at through multiple teasers, Mario is not a good guy in Lament, if anything he’s a villain. He and Luigi’s origins were that they moved into New Donk City and were nobodies. One day though, the Princess got kidnapped and the brothers figured that if they could find the Princess, they’d be renowned as heroes, or at least that’s how Mario saw it.
Eventually they found the tower Peach was being held captive in. However, instead of her being in a cage suspended over lava, they found that Peach and Bowser were in a relationship.
Peach apparently wasn’t happy with the arranged marriage her parents had for her and the soon to be Prince of the kingdom. One day however, she found Bowser, and the two fell head over heels for each other.
Of course, they couldn’t be lovers in public, as not only would it make Peach look like a cheater because of the whole marriage thing, but also, people wouldn’t accept that the beautiful Princess was dating the big scary turtle dragon. And so, Peach decided to run off to Bowser and spend time with him in the castle, resulting in a panic being spread and her being presumed as kidnapped.
When the Mario brothers found them though, this posed to be bad news.
And so, a deal was struck that day, one that Luigi wasn’t too happy with. Peach would occasionally get “kidnapped” and the brothers would rescue her from the evil Bowser. The Mario brothers would be heroes, Peach could keep dating Bowser, and Bowser wouldn’t have to worry about being jailed since no one would know what he looked like.
Everyone was happy with the deal and shook on it. Even though Luigi wasn’t, he was pressured into it. After Peach was “rescued” Mario and Luigi’s rise to fame began, mostly for Mario. This little game lasted for a while, until eventually Peach fell for Mario. Peach’s parents actually were happy with this, as they saw Mario as a better lover for Peach. Come on, the savior of the Mushroom Kingdom, the guy who rescued her from a big scary turtle dragon? It couldn’t be more perfect.
They instead ended up getting married. Afterwards, Mario decided to fake Bowser’s death, making the lack of kidnappings towards Peach make more sense to the public. Of course, Bowser wasn’t happy about any of this and wanted payback.
In the end however, he chose to drop it, as no one would take him at his word, and even if they did, Mario would probably say he’s a liar and have him jailed.
He instead chose to move on with his life and adopt kids to fill his time, the Koopalings. During this period of time, Mario’s ego and narcissism shot through the roof, so much so that he started to verbally abuse Luigi and other people around him. Not only that, but also, people in New Donk grew suspicious, and eventually found the truth.
Anyone who tried to leak the truth to the public however was quickly silenced by Mario’s own hand. The Koopalings were sadly an example of this.
They quickly got an earful from their dad about what Mario did and were livid. To avenge their papa, they all worked together and tried to tell the public about Mario and his misdeeds. They all however were killed by Mario. Another victim of Mario was Daisy, Luigi’s wife.
After getting in a relationship, Daisy quickly caught on to Mario’s abuse and attempted to tell people about it. Mario didn’t take kindly to this and killed her, all the while Luigi remained oblivious. Eventually though, Mario’s evil would meet an end in the factory.
When Bruno started to slaughter the workers, Mario ran instead of trying to help, with Luigi running after him. Luigi argued with Mario about why he left, resulting in an argument. Eventually, Mario accidentally blurted out that he killed Daisy. The two got in a scuffle, and in the end, Luigi came out on top. He beat Mario to death with a lead pipe. Quickly realizing what he did, Luigi broke down.
He failed his own brother, failed to stop him from becoming a monster. And even though he put an end to said monster, he still failed regardless. His friends were all dead thanks to Bruno, his life was gone, and even if he escaped Bruno, the cameras would show what he did and he’d be arrested and despised for the rest of his life.
And so, the only solution Luigi found was to end it all. He hanged himself with a rope from the ceiling of the boiler room he killed his own brother in.
If Lament had a villain, it’d be Mario, and it’s not hard to see why
