STATUS UPDATE - Log 1-2 and overall progress

Hi everyone! It’s DonKorge here, and today I’d like to share with you the progress we’ve achieved lately

To be honest, the creation of UTOI assets is still chaotic. First of all, this is due to the fact that we do not have a complete picture of the plot, characters, location concepts, etc. We expect that serious and consistent work on project will begin after the publication of Log 1-2. In the meantime, I'm drawing what I want and what we think I'm good at. Also trying out new areas such as battle spriting and animation creation, so before we start serious development, I have the opportunity to practice and evaluate my capabilities.

After a long period of monitoring the development of other projects, we made an important decision for ourselves, which determines all further work on UTOI.

= The decision on the style of canonical sprites and locations =

We have come to the decision that uniqueness and originality of style are not our priority. This means that we do not set ourselves the goal of rewriting the Undertale style, but we want to bring something new to it, somehow diversify and add details, including plot-significant ones, without distorting the canonical design philosophy.

For example, the Asgore’s sprite (WIP):

It's still the same original Asgore, but we've adapted his sprite to suit our approach. We plan to follow the same direction with other sprites and locations. This decision is also related to the fact that creating an interesting story is our main goal. Our approach may be changed in the future if a new solution is found.

~ Current progress ~

The drawing for Log 1-2 has not started yet

Work on the text of Log 1-2 has begun, and a general idea has been formed about the main characters of the plot dedicated to the beginning of the human journey in Ruins, about the general course of the story, about possible endings and transitions between paths

Significant progress has been made in the story characters spriting: sketches and concepts of overworld and battle sprites of several heroes are already prepared, work has begun on motion animations, and several textbox sprite sheets are ready

Work on the tiles has not started yet, but there are ideas for a variety of canonical locations

The writing of story scenes, dialogues, and the formation of the specifics of the "gameplay" began

The most difficult point at this stage of development is writing music – this is the only area of development in which we are both incompetent. Nevertheless, we are looking for a possible solution. For now, we assume that at later stages of development, when the concept of the project is fully formed, we will start looking for a musician. Currently, there is no serious need to write music, since there is no complete understanding of the plot characters, events and locations, as well as the semantic load of the story being told
