Anniversary post: August 2024 concept, first sprites and animations

(read the article, please )

Hey every ! It's me, DonKorge, and today I want to show you the very first UTOI developments

A random fantasy that turned into a real project

A year ago, I never would have imagined that this could become something more than just a basic concept for a randomly invented character. At first, Bront wasn’t meant to have any kind of backstory. He wasn’t even supposed to be part of the Undertale universe's lore.

But then, inspired by the work of many UT spriters I already admired, I thought, "Why not give drawing a Bront's sprite a try?" It was one of my very first experiments in this area. Looking back, I realize it was an awesome start to a path where I could truly unleash my creativity. Even now, a year later, I still struggle with shadows, have a poor sense of color, and probably don’t grasp a lot of other spriting techniques. But working with pixels brings me genuine joy. I’m determined to keep going no matter what.

Let's move away from this lyrical introduction. We’re all here to hear about the progress made over the past year. And I’m super excited to share it!

August 2024 – February 2025: Bront - True Wind Warrior

The creation of Bront's initial concept was quite swift. Last summer and autumn, I didn’t intend for this character’s story to be anything grand. Bront was envisioned as a secret boss - a monster whose story could impact any plot without being an essential part of it. Bront's tale stood apart from the narratives of other characters, whether they were monsters or humans.

Bront, an introverted and unfriendly little monster, is a product of the society that shaped him. It was originally planned that in the distant past, he was a resident of the Ruins who moved to Waterfall after the royal family split. Bront was born with the ability to control air, which his peers saw as a mark of failure. His inner pacifism and perfectionism led him to believe that only through communication and friendship with humans could monsters achieve freedom. This belief was condemned, leading to his life of enforced solitude.

In the old version, Bront flees from society, unable to integrate into it. Unlike in BTWW, in UTOI, he voluntarily isolates himself despite his successes. He is no longer a child wronged in the past but a monster trapped in a crisis of self-identity. The fact that he escaped from the Ruins in the August 2024 concept positions Bront as nearly one of the oldest monsters in the Underground. However, this perspective has been reevaluated in the new vision.

(Bliss helped me create motion animation and was one of the first to learn about the concept)

(The base for creating the textbox sprite was the original Ceroba's textbox sprite from UTY)

On the pacifist path, human must accept Bront for who he is. In exchange, he will give them a special whistle that can summon him for help at the moment before the battle with Asgore. In the battle, Bront will act as an ally of human, but in the original concept, the outcome of the battle was not thought out because there was no plot tie to a specific story. It is the player's right to use the whistle, so Bront's help on the pacifist path is an additional option. The concept of a special subject remains in UTOI, but we have completely revised its content, giving this subject a deeper meaning.

It was envisaged that the neutral path would develop in two directions – good and bad. On the good neutral path, the person shows friendliness to Bront, and in general, the concept of interacting with him coincides with the pacifist path. The difference is that Bront feels the cruelty shown by the human, and therefore will not allow himself to be spared, but will let the person go. On the bad neutral path, the human will attack Bront. After delivering a critical blow, the monster will escape, hiding in the inaccessible Waterfall depths. Sooner or later, he would die there alone, leaving no trace of himself in the Underground's history. In UTOI, we abandoned such an ending for Bront, but elements of the original concept will be reflected in one of the endings.

On the genocide path, Bront will put up maximum resistance to human. However, at the first encounter, he will be unable to win, and therefore will run away, fearing the approach of his own death. He will turn the fear he has experienced into hatred, finding the strength to get out of the cave and overtake the human in the capital. Unfortunately, he will die in this battle as a hero who overcame the fears of the past. The reward for a person will be the Bront's Staff, which significantly speeds up the movement of the heart during battles. The problem with this concept is the lack of meaning at the plot level.

(( Note: Bront is holding a falling leaf, keeping it above the ground. He surrendered long ago, and now it appears he has one final chance to bravely face his destiny ))

The challenges I pointed out revealed the flaws in the constructed plot and served as a catalyst for the rebranding effort. There arose a pressing necessity to link Bront's story with that of a human, which, by tradition, ought to commence in the Ruins - a place where the main character has yet to appear.

Since March 2025: Undertale: Overcoming the Inevitable

On a subconscious level, I started working on UTOI back in late 2024. In January 2025, I created the second version of Bront's sprite and its movement animation. Later, I realized that both versions didn’t match the size of sprites in Undertale, so I made the third version in March, which remains the main one to this day. Now the sprites have proper dimensions and are more consistent.

(Tomato helped me a lot by telling me that it's better to draw sprites if you have something to compare them with. The base for the creation of the third version was the original sprites of Undyne and Asgore)

Work on all the characters' sprites began in April. Over the past half-year, we've developed concepts for human and plot-important monsters, formed a general vision of the story, and defined each character's role in it. In June, we released Log 1-1, summarizing our progress on the main story part. Log 1-2, focusing on a human's adventures in the Ruins, is expected to come out this autumn. Currently, the main priorities are creating basic sprite sheets for characters (Log 2) and detailing key plot points in the Ruins.
