A thoughtful adventure centered around diversity and racial tension in a world where people treat others differently because of their eye color. Inspired by classic JRPGs of the late 90s/early 00s and anime, "Fallen Feather" is a comic book/manga themed Turn-based RPG filled with combat, monsters, puzzles, quick time events, side quests and much more.
Take part in a visually unique pixel world that bounces back and forth between top-down birds eye view, beautiful side scrolling, & 3rd-person 2.5D aesthetics.
Embrace mystical power as you begin to collect the much sought-after "fallen feathers" In this opening act of a sprawling adventure about loss, corruption, ethnocentrism, life lessons & growing up. Step into a new kind of world where "saving the world" is more about saving your fellow man.
"Beginning of the end, the first kiss"
Reaper's Kiss is the scourge of mankind. A massive, moon-like object that appeared in the sky without warning or explanation over 16 years ago. When first emerging, it's intense aura had an adverse effect on the planet that almost immediately lead to the death of millions in a matter of minutes. A horrific night etched into the minds of all who remain; An event later dubbed "The First Kiss". Shortly after, It was soon discovered that every life lost during "the first kiss" belonged to one of two prominent rival races:
"Wishes"
A race recognized by their Emerald eyes and affinity for A-type Fallen Feathers.
"Omens"
A race recognized by their Amber eyes and affinity for Z-type Fallen Feathers.
"The second kiss"
Already sharing a checkered past, this act of genocide only served to further widen the rift between Wishes & Omens as both sides mourned the lost of family and friends. With no one to blame for creation of Reaper's Kiss, tension rose at alarming rates, reaching a breaking point as another discovery was made later that year... "...The only thing worst than death is the absence of new life"; A hard lesson for Wishes and Omens to learn as they realized that Reaper's Kiss has been actively sterilizing both races, sabotaging their ability to reproduce and bear children. An on-going phenomenon now known as "The Second Kiss". 16 years have already gone by and Reaper's Kiss still remains in the sky. Never Rising. Never Setting. Resistant to all attempts of destruction thus far. The respective populations for wishes & omens continue to decline steadily as they both inch closer to a shared fate of extinction, despair began to spread in abundance.
"The present is PEACE"
Fortunately for many at the top of the decade, A community service & security force known simply as "PEACE" was formed. PEACE has worked hard for the last 10 years giving purpose back to people and dispelling tension between Wishes & Omens. Their nobility and leadership have captured the hearts of many supporters around the world, especially the admiration of Zorian Dancehall, who wants nothing more than to join their ranks and make a difference one day himself. However, while things may seem settled on the surface, uneasiness and distrust still brew between the races underneath it all....and for Zorian who believes whole heartedly in PEACE's cause, the reality of how deep racial tension can go will open his uniquely crimson eyes to a whole new world....
Combat
General UI
The Turn-based combat that occurs throughout the game is comprised of 4 simple sections that players will focus on to achieve victory.
The left "comic panel"; this area displays an active player turn indicator in the top left yellow text box, the enemy party with individual HP Bar(s) & weakness(es) that appear while targeted.
The right "comic panel"; this area displays the player's party, the turn order of battle (see "flow of battle" below for more on that), & what is known as the "Soul Power Gauge" (see "soul power & vibes" below for more) on the far right.
The "Thought Bubble Command Wheel"; Below the left comic panel on the "bottom of the page" you'll find this command wheel. This represents the active party member's thought process as players decide to perform any one of their actions from a number of available choices.
The status bar; To the right of the thought Bubble is a status bar for each party member which displays current Health Points (HP), Remnant Magic Points (RP) and a status effect(s) indicator.
Flow of Battle
Fallen Feather features the ever popular Conditional Turn-Based battle system used in several AAA JRPGs from classics such as FFX, to modern hits like Octopath Traveler & the Atelier series to name a few. Players will have an overall turn order constantly on display for them that dictates the flow of battle between you and the enemy. The choices you make in battle have different weights to them which can and will change the order of who goes next and, in some cases, how often. Your command choices could result in you dominating the opponent OR falling victim to a string of attacks! Play smart to shift the tide of battle in your favor!
Fallen Feathers & Remnant Magic
During your journey you will come across "Fallen Feathers"; Mystical plumes that grant each party member magical abilities known as "remnant magic" while equipped. inspired by the infamous Materia System, Fallen Feathers can be equipped, swapped or removed on the fly from the main menu, but be mindful as a single party member can only handle equipping a maximum of 4 Fallen Feathers at a one time and certain feathers can only be used by members of certain races. While in battle, remnant magic can be used to inflict devastating elemental attacks, boost/cut attributes or cause/remove status ailments depending on which you use! Remnant Magic also evolves! With every battle won, each Fallen Feather equipped to party members will earn experience. When that experience reaches a certain threshold, stronger variations of Remnant magic will be unlocked and available to party members!
Soul Power & Vibes
During the course of combat, actions players take will build up energy for what is called the "Soul Power Gauge". Once filled, players can spend this energy to have any and/or all active characters "Vibe" - A temporary state of focus that unlocks a party member's full latent potential, allowing them to dish out crippling attacks as well as providing them an opportunity to unleash character-specific signature moves known as “Talents”. Issa Vibe.
Exploration & Interaction
Fallen Feather happily embraces the truth that a good role playing game isn't just story & repetitive combat. Those unique breaks from the at-times-tedious formula are crucial to what makes these games all the more memorable. That's why some scenarios in Fallen Feather will require thought, quick reflexes, decision making, and good ol' problem solving skills to advance further. Solve Cases - Talk to select NPCs with the ellipsis marker to initiate and resolve side quests known as "cases"! However be careful, there are eyes everywhere, helping some people can and WILL deny you the chance to help other as solving one case may lock another from being attempted on that playthrough, choose who you help wisely. Road Blocks - Equip and Use remnant magic to remove obstacles that block your path and/or find hidden treasures! Asset System - Alter or improve your weapons and armors by attaching small cube shaped modification chips known as "Assets" to them! Puzzles and Mazes - Navigate your way around various spaces big or small as you visit various portions of a bustling city with a shady underbelly! Conquer time sensitive QTEs - complete complex button combinations at a fast pace to avoid close call scenarios. Shop directly off shelves for the items you want! Enjoy a more life-like experience grabbing the items you want and need from their respective shelves with the added modern convenience of on the spot self-checkout! Just grab and go!
(*FYI - "Gingerale" is indeed one of the most powerful healing items in the game, IYKYK!)
Sapphire City is a water metropolis where majority of volume 1 takes place. A progressive island city largely inspired by Victorian Era architecture as well as Venice, Italy & New York City. Sapphire City is comprised of 3 major commerce districts as well as 5 residential districts.
Technology
The Grid
While the architecture of Fallen Feather mirrors the early 1900s, technology is much closer to modern day society, in fact it is more advanced. The "internet of things" and "smart technology" is very much alive and thriving and the biggest testament to the sign of the times would be "The Grid". A round device that meshes the idea of real world smart phones with pocket watches. Fitting in the palm of peoples hands the grid is used primarily for communication via call & text but has reality bending apps that make life easier on the planet of Threa such as:
holo.GRAM - the leading face to face video chat program, the grid projects a full body 1:1 scale avatar projection of the person on the other end of the phone to speak to face to face with.
Grid Storage - Grids are able to take food & inanimate objects from the real world, convert them to particles and store them within the grid's almost limitless inventory for later use. Allowing users to materialize items, weapons & armors whenever needed.
P.I.D Scanner - the app for pulling data known as an individuals P.I.D (Personal Identification) on the spot. Can also be used as an index for the various Horrors that can be found in the world, their threat level and weaknesses.
"Town Talk" - A popular social media platform that shares everything from the latest news to the hottest trends and viral videos for the general public to comment and share amongst each other.
Horrors
Horrors are feral creatures that hunt, kill and sometimes even eat people for nourishment and/or sport. Like animals, all kinds of different Horrors live in the wild, some even harboring the potential to evolve. They tend to avoid large congregations of people or communities like villages and towns by nature but it isn’t unheard of for some incidents to occur. To protect and preserve life, "Rogues" primary function is to hunt and slay horrors for bounties while members of PEACE are trained to be the first line of defense against them. *(In Volume one, you'll only come across 2 kinds of Horrors but I have over 30 already designed for future installments!)
Brief History
The animosity between Wishes & Omens is ancestral, dating back to biblical times. Over several generations, attempts have been made on both ends to resolve their differences but it’s no easy task to renounce feelings that, at this point, have become indistinguishable from pure instinct. Ignorance runs far too deeply in their respective traditions and culture to simply be untangled. While politicians, officials & media will feign that all are equal and unified now more than ever, citizens all over Threa know the truth. Assaults, kidnappings, murders, hazing, discriminatory employment, etc. are all still uncomfortably common and often swept under the rug. Now, the stress of the "Second Kiss" has only served to heighten tension as the two races, desperate for answers, grow tired of putting on a mask everyday that everything is right between. Fast forward to today, While there are instances of Wishes and Omens who can and do get along, some even falling in love, the majority of these two populations are at odds and either keep their distance or openly express that hostility. Truly difficult times in an era where only eye color matters.
