Backstory

I really like to keep up with updates in Minecraft, I wanted to play all the versions. There were also secret Friday updates, I liked them the most, it's all about their mystery, because it's not known what each such version has changed or added. Who can this version add? I've always wanted to see something creepy in one of these versions, like some new mob or Herobrine (which was legendary at the time), but I've never found it. However, one time I noticed that Mojang had released a new version.

Story

It differed from all the others not only in its content, but also in its name. When I went into the version, I immediately noticed that instead of the usual backgrounds in the main menu, there were other, colorless ones, as if all the colors had been removed from this version. The name of the version (as far as I remember) was Minecraft Halloween Edition, or simply Minecraft Halloween. There is also a big difference from other regular versions — all words were written with lowercase letters. It confused me, but I decided to create a new world. I was looking forward to something mystical, after all, the version was called Halloween for a reason.

Recreation of what the world looked like

As soon as the world loaded, I noticed that there were no colors not only in the main menu, but also in the game itself. Every block, the sky, even my skin was monochrome.

I gathered the oak planks and casually looked up at the sky. I noticed that the sun was round, not like in other versions.

— Round sun? Like in Minecraft Beta 1.9?

I was really confused, because Minecraft Release 1.0 already existed at that time, why would Mojang suddenly degrade their version? For the first time, I doubted that this was the official version.

I made a crafting table. I noticed that the interface of crafting table was a little distorted. Instead of the "Crafting Table" text, there were some random symbols, but even that didn't bother me. I thought that distortions like cryptic random symbols were just a way to scare the player. I made a pickaxe and went into the cave. After mining the stone, I decided to explore the cave completely, because if you think about it, how many creepy mysterious creatures could Mojang add to the cave? The caves are already scary, all because of the cave noises. Who or what can make them in this version? I was just about to find out.

I was walking around the cave mining coal, and suddenly I noticed a torch. I couldn't believe my eyes:

— A torch? So Herobrine is in this version, huh?

I didn't realize that Herobrine's signs are redstone torches, not regular ones. Mojang wouldn't add Herobrine to the game anyway, would they?

I pressed F2 to take a screenshot of the torch, but unfortunately it didn't work. So I pressed F2 again and again but still no screenshot. It seems like there aren't any screenshots in this version, but there were in previous ones. Anyway, I needed some screenshots so I took my phone out to take pictures. I decided against collecting the torch and instead just walked past it. By the time I left the cave, it was night. I decided to explore the world and ran around. The world seemed strange without any color. I realized there weren't any hostile mobs there. I checked the settings and the difficulty level was set to peaceful. I wanted to change that but it wouldn't let me. For the first time, I started to doubt if there was anything there at all. But who had put the torch there? I found a village behind the mountain and when I approached it I expected to find anything but empty-eyed villagers who looked at me without making any sound. Everything seemed to point to the fact that this version is Beta 1.9 with round suns and beta villagers.

Maybe there's a Pigman in this version? At that time, I was very curious, I loved creepypasta, especially about minecraft, I tried very hard to find any mythical entities, like Herobrine, Entity 303 or maybe Null. I couldn't find any. One day I was told about the Beta 1.9 version, a mystical version in which, according to legend, there is a pigman. I really wanted to see him and take a photo of him, but I couldn't find this version anywhere, and after all this time, I finally found Beta 1.9, just a little different. I doubted that the official version from Mojang would contain several myths at once, like Herobrine or Pigman. They would have added something more unique.

I continued to investigate the version. Wandering around the forest, I saw a sign, the text on it said:

«DWSNWLZWYSEW. ALKHSAFXMD. EGJWHSAFXMD. SKQGMKLSQ»

I didn't know about such a thing as the Caesar Cipher, so I couldn't decipher this message. I was absolutely sure that a sign with a this kind of text was not a bug. Still, what kind of bug can put up a sign with text on it? They don't even naturally appear anywhere in the world.

At the moment when I was most expecting to find a strange entity, I saw a strange white silhouette in the distance. I immediately thought about how cool the photos could be, so I immediately made a photo of the mysterious entity. However, it (whoever it was) disappeared the moment I took the photo. I was sure that I would meet him again, so I continued walking. But just a couple of seconds later, this something appeared in front of my camera. It said

"ACKNOWLEDGE CONSEQUENCES"

I immediately quit the game and exit the window. I didn't play Minecraft for the next two months, just because of how scary that moment was. Did Mojang really add THIS to their game? I didn't find anything interesting in the game files, apart from a couple of text files. They were written on behalf of a certain being asking to leave the game.

— I have to find this entity again.

This time, I prepared myself: I prepared a program that can take screenshots, a task manager, and a virtual machine. I wasn't sure about the safety of this version.

Going into the version, the splash of the game's name was red, which was strange. From now on, I will take a screenshot of absolutely everything. I entered my world, and this entity was no longer in the place where I had last seen it, but there was redstone in that place. I knew it would take a long time to wait for the entity to appear, so I decided to build a house. While I was building it, a sign without text appeared next to me. I immediately broke it down and continued building the house. After completing my house, I thought that a monster could attack me at absolutely any second, so I went to make myself armor. In approximately 15 minutes, I managed to get enough iron to craft an almost complete set of armor and an iron sword. I could only wait. I stepped away from my computer. It took about 25 minutes, and an entity finally appeared in the distance. An error message appeared on the screen:

As soon as I clicked "Cancel", the white entity ran at me. As soon as the entity got too close, the computer shut down. When I turned on the computer again, I noticed that version deleted itself.

Later that day I decided to find more information about what could all cryptic messages be. I found a website that decoded all messages.

«DWSNWLZWYSEW. ALKHSAFXMD. EGJWHSAFXMD. SKQGMKLSQ» → «LEAVETHEGAME. ITSPAINFUL. MOREPAINFUL. ASYOUSTAY»

«FSIWJBNXMJWJ» → «ANDREWISHERE»

Aftermath

Since this version was deleted, I couldn't find it anywhere. I asked my friends but none of them remembered the Halloween edition. More than 10 years have passed and I gradually forgot about this version, but one day I logged on to a server created by my friend where only we two played and there I saw it again. It was standing in the distance when it suddenly wrote in the chat:

N REW left the game

The entity left the game. This entity spoke in a strange way, skipping letters and sometimes whole words. I understood that he was thanking me for leaving the Halloween version. After that, a text file appeared on my computer with a lot of ciphers. I could not decode everything, but eventually I got this message:

« NS DE THE G ME, TOR UR D. ST CK BETW EN VE SI NS. I W ND R B T EEN V RS ONS FOR A SMA L AMO NT OF TIME. THEN I AM H RE A AIN.»

I still want to see that version again someday. Maybe someday...
