it said "cannot read game file" on windows 11
Sonic the Hedgehog: The Screensaver was a program bundled in with Sonic & Knuckles Collection back in 1996. However, the software doesn't work on modern Windows PCs, so this small side project attempts to revive it to work on PCs newer than Windows XP.
This contains 2 versions, one with a musical mixtape, and a boring pictures only one, but you get to decide. Enjoy!
Instructions to Install Either Version
To install Sonic the Screensaver Redone onto your system properly, copy and paste the .SCR file you downloaded into the System32 directory of your folder (don't worry, this CANNOT destroy your computer). The next step has multiple different ways to do this depending on your Windows version. All are documented below:
Windows XP - Windows 7:
Right click on the Desktop and click "Properties", you'll see a Screen Saver tab, click it, click the dropdown and select "Sonic the Screensaver" (or "Sonic the Screensaver (No Music)"). The program may automatically open whilst doing this, simply press a key to close it. Then, hit "OK" to close the window and apply the changes.
Windows 8 - Windows 11
Go to your Settings, click "Personalization", then click "Lock Screen" and scroll down until you see a screensaver option. Click it, then, click the dropdown and select "Sonic the Screensaver" (or "Sonic the Screensaver (No Music)"). The program may automatically open whilst doing this, simply press a key to close it. Then, hit "OK" to close the window and apply the changes.
Like before, to close the screensaver and resume whatever you were doing before, just hit a key on your keyboard.
