VA casting is now open for Cube's Dark Hours 4!

Read the article for info:

This one has been delayed for long enough, but today is the day I chuck my anxiety out of the window and announce the official VA casting spots for Cube's Dark Hours 4!

Because I'm so secretive about how much I reveal about this specific project, not every character's name will be revealed unless you land the position and I feel like I can trust you with said info.

Things to keep in mind:

  • Audio Format: WAV or MP3 preferred.

  • File Naming example: CharacterName_YourUsername.wav

  • Deadline: Please submit your audition by July 31st, 2025.

Enough dawdling, let's get straight into it:

"Tape" Calls (pretty much important in every fangame apparently lol):

  • Female VA needed for this role. Just going to call her "Phone Gal". Phone Gal Personality Traits & Style:

    • Confident: speaks with assuredness and calm control

    • Charming: has a warm, engaging tone that draws players in

    • Mischievous: playful teasing and subtle sarcasm

    • Supportive: offers helpful tips and encouragement

    • Slightly mysterious: hints at deeper knowledge and secrets

    • Protective: cares about the night guard’s safety

    • Witty: quick with clever or sarcastic remarks

    • Relatable: sounds human and approachable, not overly formal

    • Slightly teasing: knows when to poke fun without being mean

    • Emotionally warm: can express concern or empathy in tense moments

  • Reference:

    • 25% GLaDOS (Portal): wit, passive-aggression, dry delivery when teasing

    • 75% older sister energy

  • Dummy Line:

    1. If you’re hearing this, congratulations. You’ve made it far enough to regret your life choices."

    2. If you scream, make it entertaining. I’m recording this for… quality control.

    3. I’m here, okay? You’re not alone in the dark. Unless you turn your comms off, then that’s on you.

Characters:

  • Character 1 (Male VA needed) (Not taken yet):

    • Voiceline Style: Encouraging, dramatic, slightly condescending.

    • Personality: Observant, not overly aggressive. Enjoys the idea of the game.

    • Voice Style:

      • Mid-to-low pitch, confident, controlled

      • Smooth delivery, possibly with a faint, artificial reverb, like a rehearsed monologue

      • Slight pauses for so-called "dramatic effect"

      • Almost like a charismatic showman or a sarcastic narrator

    • Reference Ideas:

      • A mix of The Narrator from Stanley Parable + Hand Unit from FNaF Sister Location

      • Possible vocal glitching only on emotionally charged words (for example, "finale")

    • Dummy line:

Hey, you almost made it. Almost counts for something... right?

(Half-encouraging, half-defeated. Almost like it wanted you to win.)

Character 2 (Male VA needed) (Not taken yet):

  • Voiceline Style: Calm, casual, eerie. Like someone used to the dark.

  • Personality: Detached, possibly welcoming you into the void.

  • Voice Style:

    • Soft, low voice, bordering on a whisper

    • Delivery is slow, casual, and unbothered

    • Little or no vocal distortion, maybe a light ambient echo to make it feel like it’s coming from nowhere

    • Could sound emotionally numb, like someone who's "been here too long"

  • Reference Ideas:

    • Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug, but very toned down

    • A calm voice like HAL 9000, but slightly more “human tired”

  • Dummy line:

It's quieter this way. No more running around.

(Peaceful tone, but only after it has caught you.)

Character 3 (Male VA needed) (Not taken yet):

  • Voiceline Style: Ominous, cryptic, inhumane

  • Personality: Represents the "darkness" itself, not a character with motives

  • Voice Style:

    • Low pitch, possibly layered vocals (multiple overlapping whispers)

    • Voice should sound inhumane. Not angry, but inevitable

    • Heavy vocal effects. Like it’s coming from deep underground or underwater

    • Speech may decay, glitch, or drop into static mid-word

  • Reference Ideas:

    • G-Man + Dark Eco from Jak 2, or Whispering Void creatures

    • Could use reversed elements subtly, or spoken backward fragments during pauses

  • Dummy line:

You didn't see me coming. That's the point.

(Almost like a hunter, emphasizes stealth and inevitability.)

Character 4 (Male VA needed) (Not taken yet):

  • Voiceline Style: Obsessive, erratic, predatory

  • Personality: A hunter who gets power from being seen and watching

  • Voice Style:

    • Mid-high pitch, unstable. Voice cracks, rises or falls mid-line

    • Can swing between whispers and sudden bursts

    • Occasional glitches, especially when he jumps cameras or grows more frantic

    • Eye-based distortion SFX (blinks, flashes) could accompany his speech

  • Reference Ideas:

    • The Moon from Security Breach + Ragdoll AI from Lethal Company

    • Maybe slight hints of a childlike tone twisted into something wrong (for example: giddy but chilling)

  • Dummy line:

You looked away... That was enough.

(Taunting, hinting at the game of hide and seek.)

Character 5 (Male VA needed) (Not taken yet):

  • Voiceline Style: Playful but unnerving, with sudden shifts between calm and manic energy

  • Personality: Coo-coo crazy and unstable, but highly intelligent and observant

  • Voice Style:

    • Mid-to-low pitch with a breathy, hushed tone

    • Slightly unhinged with occasional nervous laughter or twitchy vocal ticks

    • Pauses that feel like mental glitches or breaks in thought

    • Layered with faint echoes or static to enhance an eerie, disjointed presence

  • Reference Ideas:

    • Fuwatti (for the whispery, lore-dump style)

    • The Radio Host from Silent Hill 2 (for cryptic, eerie calm)

    • The Joker (specifically the jittery, unpredictable portrayal by Mark Hamill)

  • Dummy line:

You think you can hide? Me love hide and seek… but me always win.

(Playful, but with a sinister edge, a little manic.)

Character 6 (Male VA needed) (Not taken yet):

  • Voiceline Style: Flashy, energetic, and over-the-top. Often theatrical, like a performer who’s both charming and unhinged

  • Personality: Egotistical showman, obsessed with attention and praise. Thrives in chaos, loves to disrupt and steal the spotlight

  • Voice Style:

    • Mid-to-high pitch, bright and lively

    • Fast-paced delivery with exaggerated inflections

    • Laughs and chuckles frequently, with slight unhinged energy

    • Almost like a vaudeville or carnival barker gone wild

  • Reference Ideas:

    • Funtime Freddy’s energetic and unhinged style, but more prideful

    • Buddy the Elf meets The Joker (a little crazy, all about attention)

    • Over-the-top performers like Jim Carrey in The Mask or The Riddler (1995 version)

  • Dummy line:

Oh, what’s this? Another admirer in my spotlight? Don’t blink, or you’ll miss me!

(Playful and teasing, with a wild laugh.)

Additional "Tape" Calls:

  • Male VA needed for this role. Going to call him "Tape Guy".

  • Personality:

    • Nerdy and passionate, with a bold streak of overconfidence. Awkward and excitable, but they’ve started to believe their own hype. Think: young genius who’s a little too eager to break boundaries.

  • Tone:

    • Casual and friendly, but amped with conviction and ambition. There's a brewing intensity, like the speaker doesn’t fully grasp the scale of what they’ve done, but is proud of it anyway. The mystery is still there, but it’s charged with dramatic potential instead of just passive curiosity.

  • Voice Reference:

    Imagine a blend of:

    • Lewis from Meet the Robinsons. Still the core: young, brilliant, enthusiastic.

    • Cave Johnson-lite. Not the gravel-voiced CEO, but a younger version with that same “vision-first, consequences-later” swagger, although toned down.

    • Maybe even a hint of Tony Stark in a college dorm. You know, fast-talking, charismatic, but still nerdy.

  • Dummy line:

    1. Do NOT touch the glowing panel. Not unless you’re okay with existential nausea.

    2. Some people build robots. I built a legacy... and maybe an extinction event, but who's counting?

    3. If this tape ends suddenly, assume I invented something awesome… or accidentally opened up a wormhole.

How will this work?

Simply record your beautiful voice and act out one of the dummy lines provided. Afterwards, with your audio file ready and prepared, just send it to me and I'll review it!

Where do I send it?

  • One simple option is on Discord. Send me a quick DM with your audio file, and we'll see how things go from there.

    My discord is here

(do not expect me to accept friend requests, I'm only looking for DMs)

Can you remind me the essentials?

  • Audio Format: WAV or MP3 preferred.

  • File Naming example: CharacterName_YourUsername.wav

  • Deadline: Please submit your audition by July 31st, 2025.

That’s everything I’m revealing… for now :p

If you’re interested, grab a mic, pick a line, and throw your voice into the void.

I’m seriously excited to bring this weird, slightly broken, overly ambitious little game to life, and I can’t wait to hear what you all bring to it.

Show me something cool. Or creepy. Or completely unhinged. Bonus points if it makes me go “this is funny".

Thanks for reading. Let’s make Cube’s Dark Hours 4 something... well, at the very least, "mediocre" and fun.

Take care, stay safe, and, as always, God bless!
