As a US native, I view the only "acceptable targets" for a base to use in my fantasy work being the United States and Middle Age Britain.

I try anywhere or anytime else, the resulting work WILL probably piss someone off no matter how well I do with it.

I for one, decide not to enter my work in the metaphorical "character cruelty contest".

All dark aspects of my work like cruelty, death and trauma have a practical narrative purpose and are not left unaddressed.

The one thing that gets on my nerves more than when a work is considered "less interesting" just because the protagonists comes out alive, happy and sane...

...is when a work is labeled "not dark enough" to be interesting in the first place.
