Hensen Hopper

In this top-down shmup, you control Hensen Hopper, a vigilante grasshopper from the lower west side of The Garden who has taken it upon himself to take back his home from the control of the nefarious Yellow Jackets! Armed with his trusty honey-gun, you will help Hensen fight back against the Yellow Jackets with the aim of putting an end to their reign of terror and saving The Garden from villainous insects!


This game fully supports the following input modes:

  • Keyboard/Mouse

  • Xbox controller

The controls will be explained by in-game hints but are also listed below.

I figured out what the issue was... I had the sound pitch randomize by a factor of 2 meaning sometimes the pitch would be set to 0 or lower (which caused the sound to become silent). I am 99% sure that's what I did the last time I had this happen too smh.

I remember dealing with a similar audio bug once before where sometimes a sound seemed like it simply wouldn't be hearable but it was being played every time but I can't remember what I did to fix it...

Okay so fast forward ~2 and a half hours of work and I've gotten an effect to play when the shield breaks! There is a sound effect too but for some reason it sometimes doesn't play... Need to figure THAT out now... v0.2.1 is on the way today!

I think today I'm going to work on the effect for when the beetle's shield breaks because that was the one thing I could not get to work on my last day off before I ran out of time that day and had to release v0.2.

Just published version 0.2.0 of Hensen Hopper! This version includes the beetle enemy I've been working on for the last, I'm not sure anymore, a while. A more detailed changelog can be found in the download.

I've more or less finished off the beetle enemy's animations now. Here's a short video showing the defeat animation as well as how it currently looks in-game. I still need to work on an effect for when the shield breaks, though.

FIRST ACTUAL EDIT USING DAVINCI RESOLVE!!! Also, FINALLY, here's that clip of the beetle's idle animation I promised a while ago.

I added the leaf shield to the beetle since the last time I posted to Game Jolt! I've also added a detail where it deteriorates over time as you strike it with bullets which I think is a nice touch! Yes, it's a separate sprite from the beetle himself lol.

You know what, I'll post the video of the animation itself tomorrow because I am currently in the process of switching editing softwares (which is why I haven't uploaded much to my YouTube channel lately) and I need to learn DaVinci Resolve first lol.

I DID end up making the body and elytra both 1 cycle/s and the wings 6 cycles/s. I'm working on a video of the animation itself playing in the Unity editor so you guys can see it properly. I think it turned out well!
