Behold, one of the travel abilities available to the player in Outcasts - The ShortRift!

I'd be lying to say I didn't have a ton of fun messing around with this.

If by some miracle you completed the original demo back in 2023, you might recognize this item. I enjoyed it a lot in the original project and I'm super happy to bring it to the new one. And with a bunch of new upgrades! Let's talk about them!

The ShortRift is collected in pieces, the first two doing nothing as they're simply to construct the base device, then things progress in a specific order:

  • The ShortRift is completed with three pieces, allowing the player to teleport through the width of one tile.

  • The player is given the ability to drop through semisolid platforms.

  • The player is given the ability to teleport vertically.

  • Range is increased to the width of two tiles - Vertical movement remains unchanged.

I think the system seems pretty solid as of now, my only concern being how snappy it looks when you teleport through two tiles, but I'll figure it out.

STATE OF THE GAME

The ShortRift aside, I've made a notable amount of progress on the map. I believe three out of ten grids are finished, which doesn't sound like a lot but I assure you it is. The base game is planned to use nine grids, the tenth probably being used for side missions.

I hope to tweak the battle system to make it compatible with the new project soon, and to maybe start working on dialogue, cutscenes, the timeline, etc. very soon.

I guess that should have happened sooner. Stuff like a solid timeline is kind of important in a story-driven game like this...

BEYOND THAT...

Do you have any idea who this is? DO YOU?!

(Sprite probably subject to change)

Later!

Can we talk about Outcasts for a minute?

This is Outcasts.

But it's not the Outcasts I've talked about before.

Hey there! So, I know I said I'd have a cutscene ready in the next devlog, but something much more important has come up.

Madeline is the main protagonist of the mountain climbing platformer, Celeste. The game has been praised for its visuals, gameplay, and introspective narrative. The game's creator Maddy Thorson confirmed that Madeline is trans in 2020.

Outcasts if it was good

Sprites look like crap because it was rushed as heck, but it's a shootpost so I don't care.

Dive into the cozy post-apocalyptic open world of Critter Cove!

Gentleman Rat Studios (@GR-Rob ) describe it as “a little bit Animal Crossing, a little bit Stardew Valley. Maybe even a little bit Windwaker, too."

It was a lot harder than I thought it'd be.

Mae Borowski is the main character of Night in the Woods! It's an adventure game that tells the story of her return to her hometown of Possum Springs. She was confirmed as canonically pan in a social media post by the game's creator Scott Benson.

Experimental title sequence

(Don't worry, I'll touch up the backdrops.)
