Bit of a written update on Evergreen (article)


Progress on Evergreen slowed down a bit near the end of the year. So in the hopes of speeding up development of the ambitious post-night gameplay sections, I assigned @NeeTroo a much more involved position on the team to handle the visual content that we need for them.

The gameplay for the post-night sections requires large, detailed, themed environments. No cameras with other areas; just one big "room" per post-night level that the player is situated in, where they will face off against one False animatronic (while doing other things). There are five of these areas, naturally occuring upon completion of each of the main nights.

About 3 weeks ago, we had the general template done for these environments. Basically a skeleton, a layout of the room and how it will be rendered for the game without any details, props, decorations, lighting, textures, etc. But between three days ago and today, NeeTroo was able to basically FINISH one of these rooms by modelling brand new content and also reusing old models. Not only does the environment look amazing but it's also, in my opinion anyway, genuinely REALLY scary looking.

I wouldn't dare show you this! If I gave away anything about the post-nights, plenty of you would get upset at me for spoiling what is basically the second half of Evergreen. But I wanted to give a proper positive update since it's been a while. So a huge shoutout to NeeTroo for sticking around and doing some amazing work on Evergreen - I've felt very encouraged by these developments because honestly the post-night sections have been EXTREMELY daunting to me. I thought they'd take too long, or even be scrapped (again). But nooo. I'm thinking we're back.

I also want to shout out @GarrettMcKay for being a reliable aid during all of this, and also SmoochAGhost2 for making some insane illustrations for important textures that will appear in these new environments (and being noticeably excited about contributing to Evergreen, which is awesome). The rest of the team have continued to contribute of course, and we can't do this without everyone doing their part. Always appreciated.

Hang in there, POPGOESers. 2024 is already an important year for us, being the setting of POPGOES and all, but it might end up being more than that...
