Backstory: Karma was born as Dahlia, the daughter of a demon, but had an abusive human mother. She reluctantly took care of Karma, who, at 15, discovered he was transgender and changed his name to Karma. He was bullied at school because his demonic abilities were starting to show, driving him slowly to madness. One day, a few bullies were chasing him in the woods after he had gotten beat up when he met Addicus, who was trying to get back into Hell from the overworld. Addicus saw the bullies and sucked them into the ground with his plant magic, much to Karma’s delight. Addicus took care of Karma’s injuries, and the two fell in love. The news about Karma’s demonic heritage was beginning to spread. It had been known for a demon to fall in love with a human, but the humans were still trying to figure out the strange ways of hybrids and how the demons are able to travel to the human realm to stop both from happening again, so the FBI started to hunt down Karma and Addicus. Both are currently on the run.

Backstory: Addicus, while alive, went through a lot of religious trauma surrounding his heritage as a halfheart. His mother was a demon and his father was also a halfheart, and eventually his school called the CPS, even though his parents did nothing wrong, and took him to become a devotee. When he grew up and left that horrible life behind, he became a spy working for the government to track down and destroy a secret society that was working to summon dangerous spirits into the human realm that they worshiped. The government would’ve left them alone if their rituals hadn’t worked. Addicus was assigned to ambush the society’s ritual in the woods, but his mission failed. He was caught and killed by bamboo torture, giving him his plant-like form in the underworld and giving him the ability to control plants and vines at will. Underground, he found a way to travel back up to the human realm through spirit portals, where he met Karma and fell in love with him. Fireborne magic like creating portals to the human realm has been long since outlawed in Hell, and Addicus is wanted down there, as well as the people he’s been working with; Hunter, Winter, Zephyr, and Wolfe.

Backstory: (oh boy, here we go) Hunter was born into a complicated family. His parents had recently immigrated from Mexico and his brother and him were born in America. Hunter spoke both English and Spanish. Hunter’s mother drank a lot and was abusive to her kids, while his father was the one who protected the kids from her. One day, Hunter’s father was poisoned and taken to the hospital, where he died shortly after. Realizing nobody could protect them anymore, 17 year old Hunter and his 18 year old brother jumped a train that rode all the way to Chicago Illinois. His brother was killed when he was jumped on the streets. Hunter almost suffered the same fate when he was saved by a group of kids around his age or slightly older. They explained that they were all immigrants whose parents couldn’t stay in America and invited him to join their gang. Lucy was the leader, who came from Ireland, Otis came from Spain, Freya came from Russia, James was born in America, and Ramirez came from Mexico. Hunter pickpocketed and stole to get by, and got addicted to gambling and drinking, which worried the rest of the gang. Hunter fell in love with Ramirez (who the gang called Remy), but Remy was already in a secret relationship with another boy. Hunter grew envious of Remy’s boyfriend, so he decided to kill him to get with Remy. He felt guilty of what he did, but the late boyfriend’s friends found out Hunter had killed their friend. They dragged him into an alleyway and set him on fire. His friends came to help, but Otis convinced him of what happened and that murder could never be forgiven. Hunter begged for forgiveness and for his friends to help, but the gang simply walked away, leaving him to die. In the Fireworld, he found out he could control fire, but he still gets overwhelmed and freezes up when there’s a large, uncontrolled flame. He never trusted anyone. Not completely. Not after what happened that led to his demise and downfall.

Backstory: Zephyr was a part of a punk rock band in the late 2000s called Mashed Anatomy, alongside 4 others, named *idk*, *idk*, *idk*, and *idk*. They were very successful and began a tour across the country (UK). While they were headed towards their show in Winchester when their bus broke down. They were stranded in the middle of nowhere, and a group of superfans picked them up. However, instead of driving them to their show, they handcuffed them in their car and kidnapped them, wanting to keep them all to themselves. They were locked up and isolated in a cabin in the woods for the superfans’ delights. When the superfans were tracked down by the police, they couldn’t find the cabin that the band was held in. They didn’t find them for 3 months, but when they finally did, Zephyr was dead on the floor, and the only remains of the other band members were their clothes and pieces of flesh. It was confirmed later on that Zephyr had gone crazy from the isolation and lack of food and water that he ended up eating the other band members, and when he realized what he had done, he offed himself. But don't worry, he made up with his band members in the Fireworld and they're chill, but he's still cannibalistic...

Backstory: She was born as a seraphim created by the Gods themself. She was very loyal but, unfortunately, very curious about everything. She would follow the higher angels around like a puppy, and when she was introduced to the sinners and demons and sins, instead of hating and fearing them, she fell in love with the concept of the dynamic between good and evil, and once even travelled to The Fireworld to see what went on down there for research and curiosity purposes. When she came back to The Skyworld after the trip, however, she was greeted by all angels calling her unholy, and the Gods ordered her to be sent down to The Fireworld. She attempted to fight back, to talk to the Gods, pleading that it was all just a misunderstanding, but the angels brutally forced her down to The Fireworld, the fall breaking her wings and shattering her halo. She was an outcast in The Fireworld, called names and physically abused by the sinners, until she met Addicus, who was kind and understanding to her, and introduced her to his friends. The others didn’t really like her at first, but they got along with her after a while. Still, nothing could cure her pain and grief and betrayal of her peers in The Skyworld.

Backstory: He was an immigrant to the US in 1923 when his parents had to be sent back. Otis managed to get to Chicago with a few friends of his parents, but lost them in a crowd and never saw them again. He then joined the same group/gang as Hunter back in the day, and didn’t like Hunter too much when he arrived, but soon the two grew closer. Once Hunter started being suspicious about his behavior (was after Hunter killed Remy’s bf), Otis knew something was going on. He found out firsthand what he did while intending to talk to Hunter while he was on a phone call. Hunter pleaded that he was sorry, but Otis was looking for a reason to hate him by now. He told Hunter that if he didn't pay him 300 dollars (which was worth A LOT back then) then he wouldn't tell. Hunter tried to get the money, but he couldn't, so Otis told the others in the gang that Hunter was a traitor, and when the gang tried to save him from the fire, Otis shoved them aside and convinced them that he deserved it. He then started conning for a living to get by with scammed money, creating fake IDs and jumping from city to city, state to state. He started to go crazy, showing severe signs of developed psychosis and schizophrenia. It drove him to the point where he ended up accidentally offing himself.

STORY

Setting (and brief history): The setting takes place mostly in a hell-like place under the ground known as The Fireworld. The Fireworld is a dystopian kingdom, while The Skyworld (heaven) is a vast and beautiful paradise. Karma was born and grew up in Pennsylvania (a town called Woodring). Basically what happened is that the population of demons and halfhearts changed the entirety of Christianity and now everyone changed everything after they found out there are actually more Gods. 5 of them.

Spirit Portals: Spirit portals are handheld mirrors that demons can travel through with a demonic incantation (no idea yet), but they have to hide their demon appearances from humans (the ones that have more human-like skin and features are easier to hide than others). Some places secretly allowed all kinds of demons without human punishment (which is illegal in most countries in the world. America is an exception, leaving the law to the state governments instead) like bars, clubs, restaurants, and some stores. But the world was being overrun by the demon population, and Lucifer had kept spirit portals a secret from the Gods anyway, and the demolition of spirit portal use started in the early 2000s. He banned spirit portals since humans started to hunt demons and sell them, but some still owned illegal spirit portals. The punishment for the crime of possessing an illegal spirit portal is public execution to make an example of the criminal. If a demon gets caught, one of two things could happen. One: they would be studied. Two: they would be sold or killed. The latter of the two is usually the most common outcome.

Man: Man was exposed to all this goofy drama long before they were even created. The concept of man was so baffling to everyone else that they thought The Gods were crazy. But no, they made them anyway, and made them weak and powerless (pretty sure they wanted some entertainment because they were bored so they made tall, hairless monkeys with good posture) But when man got smarter and stronger, the Gods and everyone else in the Skyworld were shocked. Nobody expected such a feeble and pathetic species to advance and evolve this much. When spirit portals were introduced, man grew afraid. Gods knew demons couldn’t tangibly travel to the human realm… right? The more society advanced, the less and less man did anything about the demons, until scientists and hunters came along. A group began to form of demon hunters that would find demons, trap them, and sell them as servants, slaves, or even exotic pets (crazy). Businesses that allowed demon entry had to be much more secretive, since demon hunters searched every inch of every town in every city for demons to make money off of the demon trappers. Those who were sane enough not to harm demons were typically left alone, unless they were gullible and naive enough to be tricked into making deals with demons. Demonic dealing would be power and money in exchange for the target’s soul after death, yet only demonic royalty (princes, Lucifer, Hunter, Otis, Karma) could make deals and steal souls, but since the ban of spirit portals, there have only been a small handful of deals made in the past 2 centuries. People who were afraid of demons were haunted, while the chill guys were left alone (because it's no fun haunting someone who wasn’t scared of you). But demon hauntings were typically done by summoned Fireborne.

Fireborne: Fireborne species, such as imps, succubus, incubus, baphomet, etc, are unable to set foot in the human realm unless summoned, but when they are summoned, they are more powerful than demons who use spirit portals. They can possess people, cause mischief undetected, drive people insane, basically anything a ghost could do. Unfortunately, they are pretty much powerless in the Fireworld, so, ya know, it’s not really that great being fireborne…

Halfhearts: In the world of demons traveling to the human realm, there’s a fairly large chance a demon and a human could create a hybrid commonly known as a halfheart. Halfhearts typically remained human as long as they were never exposed to their demonic heritage. Karma being exposed to Addicus, a demon, would spark his powers and the longer he was exposed, the more power he had. Some halfhearts, like Karma, start developing powers early. Mostly if the demon parent was a very powerful demon, Karma’s father being Lucifer himself. Schools are taught about demons and halfhearts, telling the students that halfhearts are just as dangerous as regular demons as long as they were not highly religious devotees. They were discriminated against by everyone else (mainly popular kids who had no common sense) so halfhearts didn’t have too many friends, but it depends on where they grew up. America is a mixed chance, but places like Norway and Canada are more accepting, while some places in Asia and Europe are treated poorly. In the past, mainly in the 1600s, there was a popular practice known as Halfheart Purification, which required exorcists to cover the halfheart at the ripe age of 18 in the ashes of previous halfhearts and lay them down on an iron table and carve open their chest, cut off the left side of their heart, cut out the eyes, slit the mouth, and burn the corpse, but most places don’t do that anymore. And the places that do typically only do it to the halfhearts who aren’t devotees. Childhood trauma from school typically leads young halfhearts to dark habits and dark places where the demons hang out. The demons lure the halfhearts to Hell, where they discover their power. Halfhearts are the only other beings (other than demons) that can safely step foot in The Fireworld. Humans would immediately be wiped from existence in a fiery blaze.

Demons/Sinners: Sinners were once human, but after they died and were judged at the pearly gates, they were sent down to The Fireworld to reside forever. Sinners can only be killed with iron weapons and holy water, otherwise they’re immortal. They can be killed with basically anything else, but unless it’s iron or holy water, they’ll just respawn. They can also be warded off by crosses, so most recreational buildings in the human realm that are against demons have crosses above the entrances. Demons have the ability to turn invisible to humans. Other demons can see them, but humans can’t unless the demons want them to, making humans a lot more suspicious (hence, the crosses). Sinners take the humanoid form and powers of their personality and how they died (ex. Hunter burned alive so he has phoenix wings and tail and can summon fire). The more human-like the demons are, the more they can pass as regular humans in the human world (ex. Zephyr, Otis, and Wolfe), since it takes a lot of energy for the demons to appear invisible to humans. Demons get their energy by stealing electricity from humans, but there isn’t much electricity in Hell, so there was a fake kind of electricity created down there called faltricity. It’s made with the fire in The Fireworld mixed with sparks that creates energy that powers their cities and is also used in most food and drink down there. It’s not as powerful to a demon as regular electricity, so those that still owned spirit portals were addicted to regular electricity and is sometimes sold as a liquified substance in The Fireworld as a bright, yellow liquid in wine bottles. Also sloth demons are typically the nicest (sloth is a goofy sin)

Winners: Sinners and winners. What’s the difference? Winners go to The Skyworld. Winners are basically the people (there aren’t that many these days) who haven’t sinned or have begged forgiveness (they get it easily because the Gods love their humans smh). Yeah, that’s pretty much it. They don’t usually get cast down to The Fireworld (because the Gods are way too forgiving when it comes to that it’s usually the skyborne because they’re supposed to be beings of pure holiness and that would be sacrilege if they ever sinned. Sighhhhh) Halos, wings, the whole shabang. Now the thing is, all winners look exactly how they did when they were living, but get awesome glow-ups. That’s all. They never use spirit portals (they don’t even know they exist) but watch over and protect their family members and friends that are still living. They can’t see demons at all no matter how the demons try. Can’t see evil.

Angels: Angels, otherwise known as skyborne, are in charge of basically everything in heaven. They’re jobs are to bring miracles to the living and serve the winners in heaven. They aren’t human-like or humanoid, they are mostly just eyeball creatures (biblically accurate stuff)

Gods: This is basically Greek gods but there’s like 5 of them and the religion surrounding them is more like Christianity. It's complicated, but yeah. There’s Casi, Alizeh, Phrodyt, Anastasia, and Morgue. Casi is the god of peace, Alizeh is the god of weather, Phrodyt is the god of love, Anastasia is the God of life, and Morgue is the god of death, but he got replaced with Lucifer smh because people started worshipping him and offering him sacrifices to keep them from dying (which doesn’t work). So Morgue got sent to The Fireworld lol imagine.

The Right Hands: Serve Luci directly, in charge of mostly everything in the manufacturingindustries in Pride. They also control the military facilities and work as generals in Wrathmost of the time. On top of that, they’re in charge of the law alongside the 7 princes. There’s a lot of work to balance, but between the fear they present in front of sinners, fireborne, and humans alike, they’re jobs are easier. After all, Luci chooses his right hand men directly. In fact, he chooses two souls directly after recent right hands die (example, the two that came before Hunter and Otis died during the Second Great Exorcism) and decides they’re destinies to make them sinful, then drags them down to the Fireworld with him after they die, which would be a few years or so after Luci chose them (The old right hands died in 1940, and Hunter died in 1941, while Otis died in 1942).

7 Princes of the Fireworld: The seven princes are as followed - Pride: Luci, Lust: Asmara, Gluttony: Belizub, Envy: Levitha, Sloth: Bellapho, Greed: Maomam, Wrath: Saitorn. The rings of the Fireworld each have their own jobs. Pride is mainly in charge of law and manufacturing, Greed handles finance, Lust is the entertainment district, Wrath is the military bases and facilities, Envy is the ring that all fireborne live in, though they can travel and live in other rings, envy has most fureborne establishments, jobs, and other estates, Sloth is for hospitals and medical centers and is also where most Halfhearts live, since Sloth is more or less a sin in actuality and is the most docile ring overall, and finally, Gluttony is the food and drink headquarters.
