Early on in the development of The Machinist, I had the idea of adding a fourth tier of robots to the overworld to go in the North Forest during its restoration (or after a FAILED restoration). And this tier was going to be either "Haunted" or "Heartless", the idea being that the hundreds of souls lost during the events of The Dead Forest had haunted loads of leftover/destroyed robots, reactivating them with paranormal features like blood/oil pouring from their missing parts.
The idea of the Heartlesses returning via robotic enemies in PA was actually repurposed somewhat into the minibosses. If you look carefully at the Robot Chica, Foxy and Bonnie designs, they actually have the keycard which you need for the minecart, on their chests. If they were to ever be re-activated or haunted, I guess they would be heartless. But they don't, so let's just pretend.
