I would also say theft is a risk, but if we're being COMPLETELY honest, pretty sure no one wants to steal a style so deliberately exaggerated and stylized (yes the huge eyes receive the most hate, but they remain non-negotiable). Unfortunately, as a no-name solodev, my work can be a prime target for vandalism.
Really, I would say vandalism is even worse for a visual novel game, which is driven by story and art instead of gameplay. It would break my heart to put in months of work into a integral piece of a passion project only for some internet jerkwad to take it and replace the game story with text saying horrible things and modify the art so that everyone is naked/distorted, etc. The culprit is also more likely to get away with it because my work is not widely known or mainstream. The game may be publicly shared and be made with a publicly available engine, but the end result is still my work so it would affect me most.
I stand by every game I make being free of charge, but sometimes I can't help but make a story that really only works as one comprehensive unit. Stories like that can get really big, especially for web builds. I would rather do everything in my power to get the required space for a web build than allow someone to have access to all of the game's actual files, though. Here's hoping I never have to!
