INCREDIBLY Important Poll: The fate of Classic Edition

Quick disclaimer: this post will spoil some mechanics involved in the true endgame of Classic Edition.

If you don't wasn't to get spoiled on it, I suggest you hold off on participating in this until you are able to piece together the Red Disc.

(Hint: you'll need to think outside of the box to get the items you'll need to accomplish this.)

If you already have obtained this item or just don't care, then read on.

Alright, so you all know it. I know it.

The battle system is broken. Possibly even beyond repair.

I'm currently trying (and failing) to get the character turns, revives and deaths working properly. Each time I end up having something not roll over, or a dead player not revive, or worse. As much as I'd like to blame it on the rework of party swapping that Armageddon's fight required for the main gimmick, it ultimately comes down to the spaghetti code that's been wildly imperfect since day 1 of the battle frame coming into existence.

I don't know how long it would actually take for me to figure out what I need to change to get it working, and I'm just getting tired of trying to solve it. My well of patience is running dry. My head is sore from banging it against a wall for years.

So I've decided I'm giving myself a proper deadline. And I'll let you all decide where we go from there.

---

I'm giving myself until next week Sunday (6/30) to see if I can get this nearly decade old battle system back into a stable enough state for public release. Failing that, here are the options:

PLAN A: Salvage

I attempt to salvage what I can of the code by reverting the party swapping back to a single flag. It would certainly require a complete rework of Armageddon, but it is the price to pay for the battles being anywhere near playable.

PLAN B: Substitute

I kill the battle frame and replace it with a less complicated alternative.

(i.e. I just make every battle into Foxy Fighters with extra items.)

PLAN C: Scorched Earth

I give up on trying to save CE and just begin working on the redesign like I've been aching to do for quite some time. It'd be a longer wait for a playable build, but there would also be a new battle frame built in place of this old piece of junk one.

---

Well, that's about it for now. I'll see if I can save Classic Edition, but currently the odds are looking grim.

'Till next time.

I know it's completely unintentional, but I swear this is the universe trying to convince me to dig my old handiwork out of retirement and do something with him.

Can it be done?

(Also, Happy New Year)

While I chip away at the code for XL, I might as well show off the fruits of another thing I had tinkered with: modding custom music into Bionicle Heroes.

Got a (mostly stable) demo ready for the occasion!

So, Plan B: The remainder of tonight will run V1 of a solo OCN mode, with an updated version coming tomorrow during the end of the con.

(And a further refined public release of this later on. If there's interest.)

Still deciding if it's worth committing to a full rebuild, but I at least figured out a better way to handle the party swapping mechanic.

Yeah, we're doing this.

Mini Progress Update:

Motivation came back for a bit, so I figured I'd use it to bring Minibosses back into the fray

(Also working on a demo-specific sidequest that hands out powerups.)

I think I know what needs to be done to shake up XL's next public appearance...

This whole "making a new battle frame" situation does give me an excuse to add some things I had been putting off for far too long.
