Month 23: Checkpoints & Health


For a long time, I wasn't sure what to do when you run out of health. On one hand, sending you back to the very start of the level was a big setback and felt too punishing, but on the other hand, giving a checkpoint after every room made avoiding enemies pointless as you could damage boost through every level. I didn't like the idea of lowering Bast's health to 1 or two to combat this, because that wouldn't work well in boss fights. Luckily, I think I came up with a solution.

Running out of health sends you back to the start of the level (gif 1). However, clearing a room without taking damage marks that room as flawlessly cleared, indicated by that room's icon turning green in the top right corner (gif 2). Rooms cleared flawlessly are automatically skipped when you make your way back (gif 3).

As you can probably tell, I can't figure out how to insert gifs into the main body of text with the new content editor. Let me know if this is still possible, and, if so, how to do it so I can keep making beautiful posts.
