Learned how to use Adobe Illustrator just for this, but I finally gave my characters a much needed makeover. Here is one of them.
Figured out how to display the number of items found instead of displaying the same item multiple times. Might be a little hard to see them in the gif though :(

Items can now be moved between inventory slots and swapped places with each other. The inventory system is slowly coming together!
