Hello everyone, hope you guys having a good day.
So wanted to tell everyone what the project been up to. It wasn't abandoned just reevaluated in what I want and how to do it properly.
tldr for those who don't want to read it all.
Started from scratch, upgraded to new engine for a lot of newer features for players to have fun with, and will be making a new GameJolt page over the next week for the new features. I will make a new post with the new GameJolt link when it is ready.
Over the last couples years I focused on learning new systems and improving on what I already had in the project.
I decided to start coding the project from scratch a bit ago.
After thinking about how to update it form the original code I realized it be better to make a new Unity project and re do everything.
This allowed me to implement newer features from Unity for a lot better stuff.
URP for better lights/shadows, post process for effects. shader graph for shader effects like snow that accumulates on objects, better performance, and a lot better VFX system for weather.
Figured out how to design dynamic weather effects that the player can physically interact with not just have the weather effects be visuals.
This came with new systems for making better interactable environments. Imagine being able to freeze water with ice magic to get to different areas. Burn trees, flowers, and grass and whatch it spread. This is possible with the new Render Pipeline updates.
The starting from scratch upgrade came with better UI systems for making the game. Using Unity UI Toolkit I can make tools that make creating the game a lot faster and much more easier for level designers.
There is a lot of benefits that came from restarting from scratch and updating to a newer version of Unity. Original Immortal Chronicles was made with Unity version 2019.3
Current version is Unity version 2023.1.
Yeah four years worth of engine updates to make my life a lot easier and giving me a lot more tools to work with.
So yeah, it was worth starting over for. Got to learn a lot working on the original version letting me learn how to make cleaner and better code systems making game development cycles faster which means faster updates.
I will be making a new GameJolt page for the remake version.
I will share it in a new post when ready.
Next up
Just a little teaser of wip art for the upcoming library area. Going to have a new background made so the contrast looks better, but for now I am enjoying it. Do note will be uploading a gif within next couple days so you can see the animated objects.
Here are some more NPC art. Next week we will have the character art for the town people started. One of these animations is just for small detail when entering the library randomly. Would be boring if every character only had one type of idle animation.
Started making a mini diagram to show each region and the connections between them. This way people will have a semi direction hint before the map system update comes out. There are more regions not shown. Note this doesn't include the fast travel system.
Added a small box with the speakers name in it, so players can see who is speaking. Going to start showing off some smaller work in progress stuff starting now up to the first alpha. Each post will be focusing on one change for the first alpha.
Alright guys time for some art updates. Here is a couple animations for our first couple NPC. https://gamejolt.com/games/immortalchronicles/445565
Alright after a crap ton of time we found a UI artist that can do pretty good. This is early Work in progress. We will release the next update when we get two menus screens done instead of waiting for all the UI to be completed. Look forward to it.
Working on some level design prototyping for some of the underground areas. Wanted to just share some things I am testing. Mainly having waterfalls as a background element for the caverns.
While working on the first full Alpha build, I decided to start adding a little bit of NPC dialogue and other stuff to start making the game feel somewhat alive during the early alpha stages.
Got volumetric lighting working with my custom shaders. Will need to tweak some settings and working on the castle environment lighting now. Pictures are with and without the lighting enabled for the player and throne.
Mini Dev Blog 6 - Ambience VFX/SFX and Settings Menu Update. I started to add some VFX and some ambience SFX for parts of the game. The main thing left before finishing alpha one is the settings menu for controls, graphics, and audio.
