Genre Swap: A Game Jam Challenge to Mix and Match Game Genres

Game development has always been a creative and innovative field, constantly pushing the boundaries of what games can be and how they can be played. Game jams, in particular, have become popular platforms for game developers to showcase their skills, experiment with new ideas, and collaborate with other developers.

This week, we are excited to announce our Scratch Game Jam #2 theme: Genre Swap.

What is Genre Swap?

Genre Swap is a game jam challenge where participants are tasked to mix and match different game genres to create something new and unique. It's all about taking familiar game elements from one genre and transplanting them into a different genre.

For example, what if you took the fast-paced action of a shooter game and combined it with the strategic gameplay of a city-building game? Or what if you took the puzzle-solving mechanics of a point-and-click adventure game and combined it with the immersive storytelling of a role-playing game? The possibilities are endless, and we can't wait to see what participants come up with!

Examples of Genre Swap in Games

Many successful games have already blended different genres to create something new and exciting.

One example is "Portal," a game that combined first-person shooting and puzzle-solving mechanics to create a unique gameplay experience.

Another example is "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild," which mixed elements of action-adventure, open-world exploration, and role-playing games to create a highly immersive game world.

"Dark Souls" series merges role-playing elements with action game mechanics, letting players explore, fight, and survive in a dark and creepy world.

Participants can draw inspiration from these and other games and create their own unique mash-ups. They can experiment with different combinations of genres, game mechanics, and storytelling elements to create something that challenges players and pushes the boundaries of what games can be.

How to Participate in the Game Jam

This Game Jam is being hosted on itch.io. Please visit the event page for more details.

Scratch Game Jam #2

This Game Jam encourages the inclusion of elements from different types of games, making it perfect for finding teammates to participate together. We recommend using the online collaboration feature of the Gandi IDE.

There is a blog post here that tells you how to set up collaboration.
