POPGOES - Weekly Update (02/06)

Hi guys,

Not too much to share this week but still a few cool things! Also hey, question, do you think that this "series" should be renamed to "Behind the Scenes" instead of "Weekly Update"? I only ask because I think some people expect a bit too much from these posts... these don't exist to blow people away with amazing new content or teasers (though they do sometimes include exciting stuff), but rather to be transparent about development and show you guys what we're currently working on. Would that title be better? Or does it not really matter? Let me know what you think.

Replacing the Squirrels High Five sticker is the amazing new Blake Huh? sticker! And with Blake receiving a sticker, that means every single main character (plus Blackrabbit and Morse) has some representation. So what's next? Any ideas?

The FNAC + POPGOES Game Jolt Art Contest is OVER!

image.png

This awesome art contest that I worked on with Game Jolt is now officially over, and we're now in the process of picking winners. This may take a while, but hopefully I'll be able to announce everything by next week?

As a reminder, there will be a main winner for FNAC, a runner-up for FNAC, a main winner for POPGOES and a runner-up for POPGOES. Four winners in total with physical prizes (US only).

I will also be showcasing a TON of the artwork that was posted during this event in my weekly posts (obviously!) So if you aren't chosen as the winner, there's still a chance that your POPGOES artwork and post will be shared.

A huge thank you and well done to everyone who participated (except the ones who stole stuff...), and maybe we can do this again sometime!

Also thank you to @TearEyedRoses and @JenPen_ for their artistic contributions to the quest itself, and to @BabblingBendu for handling things behind the scenes!

POPGOES Evergreen:

This week we worked on some things that I can talk about, and some things that I can't! Garrett, for example, has begun working on a good framework for the new post-night section environments. Ticking things off. The things I can talk about this week mostly revolve around animation work, namely the new jumpscares.

A few days ago I revealed Popgoes the Weasel's jumpscare animation, which looks like this:

front.gif

And the reception to this has been pretty incredible to be honest - practically everyone I saw REALLY liked how this looked. And I'm totally with you; E.Breddy did a FANTASTIC job. So I'm going to talk about this a bit more and give some other goodies.

Firstly I want to clarify some things:

  1. YES, Popgoes can jumpscare the player! He always could! A load of people asked me when/how Popgoes attacked the player, and it's when your Panic reaches 100%. When Panic maxes out, you experience a "panic attack" which is a hallucinatory jumpscare from one of the active animatronics. That's it!

  2. In the final game, the background will move during the jumpscare. I'm not sure in what way, but I would guess it will include horizontal shaking, perspective distortion, things like that. I also think the phone will slide out of view during the jumpscares as well.

  3. Some people asked about compression, because some canon FNAF games like UCN have very blurry jumpscares due to Scott scaling the animations down (to one eighth their original size!) before putting them in the game. And I'm not sure what we'll do yet since we're still early in programming development, but it's possible that these jumpscares will be in full resolution in the game. That'd be nice!

Some people liked the idea of Popgoes' jumpscare being OVER the Panic bar (bottom left), but some people also did not like it. So, to clear things up, this is how it looks if the Panic bar is in front:

frontpanic.gif

So now you can actually compare and let me know which one you prefer. Try to ignore the phone which still looks kind of weird being behind Popgoes' head.

And on top of this, how about I show you how this jumpscare looks in the other angles of the dining room?

Here's the right view:

right.gif

Here's the back view (ignore the fact that there is another Popgoes on the show stage...):

back.gif

Aaand here's the left view:

left.gif

So of course, we've had to design the jumpscare setup so that Popgoes looks at least DECENT in these three views (when their lights are at max brightness) and I think it looks great. Plus these things happen so quickly that I don't think a little lighting inconsistency will be noticed. It should be terrifying. Much more startling than the original game anyway.

How about some behind the scenes?

Here's one of the first render tests we did of Popgoes in this setup, but with normal eyes:

image.png

And here's one of the first animation tests that E.Breddy did, with some real flappy arms. Looks a little silly in hindsight but it was an integral step in reaching the awesome final product:

flap.gif

So what have we worked on since this? Well... Blake's jumpscare is also finished now! But I'm not going to show it off, at least not yet. But it's awesome, and it's fairly unique from Popgoes.

I will share this funny tidbit though:

image.png

It may be hard to see, but it turns out that Blake's left ear has had incorrectly mapped materials for a while... I have no idea how nobody noticed. But if you look back at any recent renders of Blake, it's possible you'll notice this super smooth (unprinted) white outer ear, and weird wiggly black inner ear:

image.png

This isn't present in ALL older renders. Which has really confused our team. Of course we only noticed this issue while working on his jumpscare, since it features a close-up of his face.

Not to worry though, it has been fixed:

image.png

And Blake's jumpscare is now finalised and rendered, ready for the game!

Breddy has already begun working on Sara's jumpscare, which will feature her appearing from the ceiling! Yes, just like in the original game. So that's gonna be pretty crazy.

Last thing I want to mention regarding Evergreen, is that we've been thinking about how to promote the game to wider audiences through things like short videos, teasers, etc. POPGOES is still considered the least-known and least-anticipated Fanverse series, even though we've definitely given the most updates, and it's very likely to be because most of the content we release is designed to please people who ALREADY care about the game. We've never done anything like FNAC4's "transmission" or FNAF+'s Breaking + Entering, which were videos that were kind of designed to go "viral" somewhat and reach new people.

So I'm wondering, what kind of teaser or video do you think would work well to promote Evergreen? On the top of my head, I think the False animatronics are the most accessible and interesting feature of Evergreen to outsiders. They are literally Nightmare-Toys... that's viral YouTube thumbnail material right there. So maybe we should do some creepy teasers or videos of False Freddy / BB. Or maybe we could work on a cartoon of the Popgoes Pizzeria with some spooky corruptions by Bonnie Glade. Of course, whatever we might come up with, I wouldn't want to spend too much time on as Evergreen itself is the priority. But what do you think? Let me know if there's anything in particular you'd like to see, or if you have any ideas on how we can promote the game to new people!

Manora is in the game.

image.png

And we have a version of the game working on Android.

(Mostly...)

That's it! I think both of those are pretty cool as-is. Stuff is getting done!

Other:

The Hot Topic shirt with Sian's (@turntail ) badass Springtrap artwork is actually FOR SALE in some places. Multiple people have found it in person and it's apparently selling out fast.

Fingers crossed for more FNAF merch like this because gawd damn!

All done. Thanks for reading, and another huge thanks to everyone who took part in the art contest!
