I love gameboy games.

I love minimalistic graphics.

At least I can run these games on my toaster...

'First Impressions' is a short RPG in development for the Game Boy Color.

Fight your way through 5 school days throughout a total of 7 different routes each focused on a different character with "fights" representing tasks such as rugby team try-outs, hectic science experiments and more!


Goal:

Complete development before my Summer Break ends

Days left: 72/89.5

Quick heads up - Probably won't be a proper update for a while

Got a new laptop but it's having problems with GB Studio so I'll see if it's just the game's project file or GB Studio itself, and then either redo it on this laptop or continue on the old one

Got a decent bit of dialogue done today...

Until GB Studio decided to crash when I tried to do one more build just before I saved to take a break T_T

On the plus side though... HUB Lily! :)

It only took about an hour, so I didn't lose too much progress...

Bit of a busy day today so I didn't do much unfortunately...

I will share this screenshot for screenshot saturday though, including Aya's shrunk HUB version (top right).

Tomorrow is strictly coding more of the Day 1 intro scene before the first hang-out.

Started putting together the first day of game.

A bit worried about space cartridge space since I'm at 140 KiB of 4MB...

If it comes to it I might have to simplify the colours and dialogue. I'll see with time though...

Finally got around to making the actual protagonist lol.

Coded and made music for a menu and file select (inspired by Kirby's Dreamland 2)

I also have 3/6 of the main characters sprite sheets done ( until I need new ones for specific stuff I'll write later)

Finally I have 4/6 of the first day hang-outs written.

Did more sprite work and a bit of writing today, but the big achievement was coding this intro segment and the GB/SGB/GBA detection. There's a few unique messages like this you have a small chance of seeing on opening the game.

Colorized the pitch and garden in-engine to get a feel for what they'll look like

Also wrote 2 of the lunch hang-outs and planned the first 2 battles for day 1

From tomorrow I have 82 days to make this, so I either gotta hurry up a bit at the rate I'm going at or just multi-task and code while writing...

Love how color mode can make a scene look so much more lively when used right, and I certainly hope I've done that here! (Not to say DMG games can't be beautiful either though...)
