I'm having this thought that Gamejolt might not be the best place for indie developers. This platform has undergone some big changes over the years. What initially started out as a space for developers to publish their games, has now become a platform that mostly resembles something like TikTok or Instagram. There's no hiding that Gamejolt has turned into a platform where developers have been overshadowed. The only times developers get recognition is if they are a creator. For example, Kane Carter, or Rotas. Following that statement, the only games I see getting recognition consist of games that were published around 2019. And it's always those same games that I see getting recommended on other people's gamepages.
Another big issue is that people really only care about Five Nights At Freddy's. I don't have anything against the idea of a FNAF Fangame, it's just that it's basically become the main genre on Gamejolt. Nobody cares about original games. I once seen a game developer with a FNAF Fangame with over 1,000 followers, and sitting right next to it was an original game that had less than 10 followers. Everywhere I look, the Turbowarp community, Scratch, Blender, they all have something related to FNAF. Wheras the people working on original games receive no credibility.
Here's my advice. If you are an indie developer working on a project, it would be best to release the game on Steam via a publisher. This is what big games like Ultrakill, Amanda The Adventurer, White Knuckle, Faith: The Unholy Trinity did. They pitched their game to a Steam Publisher (ie. New Blood Interactive, DreadXP, Critical Reflex, etc), and they got their game put on Steam. Now, I'm not too familiar with this, I'm slowly learning, so I won't be able to give proper insight on this. This is just my advice, and a concern I have been seeing with indie developers.
