ATTENTION ALL CONTENT CREATORS/DEVS:

The "ten-percent rule" is a golden rule when planning for profit/revenue on social media, especially if your online presence is very small (say, 1000 followers or less for this particular site).

Details in article.

Once again, this post is to address a general topic, no one is targeted.

I will use the word "expect" a LOT, this refers to the norm (though some people get lucky, statistics are reliable). Unfortunately, it is all too normal for results to fall below expectations.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

So a refresher of the ten-percent rule:

  • Statistically, less than 10% of your whole following can be expected to do more than lay eyes on your post and scroll without doing anything (ex - only ten percent or less can be expected to press the like/comment button)

  • Only less than 10% of THAT ten percent (that does stop and hit that like button) can be expected to actually DO whatever it is you're asking for in your post - checking out a game, donating, following you elsewhere, etc.

So that means if you have 1000 followers, only expect 100 or less to hit the like button on anything you post, and only 10 or less to actually consider doing anything beyond that. And that's if stats are on your side (in terms of the genre/style/aesthetic you pick for your content - if it's niche, the percent may go down to two percent or less).

Now imagine if you want to make profit but have 500 followers or less. Unless you get extremely lucky, it is HIGHLY unlikely that your efforts will bear monetary fruit at that stage. You may have to put in a lot more work and time to statistically expect monetary success.

If you are a content creator of any kind (dev, artist, musician, writer, whatever)....don't expect success with any donations when your online presence is still that small. Speaking from experience, it will end in disappointment 99% of the time.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Now keep in mind, I am NOT saying this to discourage you, only to warn you plan ahead carefully. We have seen examples of creators starting out with less than us now making more than we could ever dream, so it absolutely CAN be done by any of you with enough time and effort. I just don't want anyone jumping the gun when they suddenly get a burst of confidence or a break from a burnout/depressive state that puts their head in the clouds.

And again, I speak ENTIRELY from experience on this matter. I don't want you making the same mistakes I did before, cos the fall and the crash are both very brutal. A lot of you have ideas with hella potential, and I don't want you to give up on them after getting confident that your content or even public pity for your situation can get you money quick and receiving that silent, crushing wake-up call of an empty campaign for months if not years.

PLEASE keep being public, persistent, patient and proud with your posts, no matter what people think, no matter how long it seems. The road is going to be long and arduous, and it is best to keep in mind what odds are stacked against you. Be sure to calculate just how much of an audience you need to expect your desired return. Just know that if you go in understanding this, your mental health will be a lot more resilient to the roadblocks on your way to success.

Do you know who this is, without leaving this post/tab or pulling anything up?

If SO, you are in the core demographic of the Eternal Frenemies Project!

If NOT, you are in the peripheral demographic.

Article explains, and don't worry, they're BOTH great!

So it's been a week since the game finally launched...

Has anyone reached the end of story mode?

The first achievement (playing through the whole story) unlocks a special surprise...that I have never mentioned as of yet :3

So....with the game done, I think I'll let it marinate... Hope that it works well enough to grow an audience.

What was the takeaway for me as a dev?

Read the article to find out! #ScreenshotSaturday

Mae Borowski is the main character of Night in the Woods! It's an adventure game that tells the story of her return to her hometown of Possum Springs. She was confirmed as canonically pan in a social media post by the game's creator Scott Benson.

Okay, so the first 24 hours seem good....of course, the ten percent rule reared its ugly head, but the game did a little bit better than I hoped! The game has 50 followers!🙌🏼

Still some little issues to add to the update checklist...in the article below.

Steady rolling along with Chapter 11! It’s been a COOL minute, but I’m glad I devved the game before I did any more chapters cos now I’m more used to drawing everybody! (Backgrounds are still the bane of my existence though)

When it comes to my work, romance is not the only area of common tropes among my VN games and comics!

Read the article to learn what other tropes I use in my works and how I go about handling them! Perhaps they may even be of use to you!
