So I've already established that using such old tropes can present a disadvantage to mainstream audience used to seeing darker twists to them and thus kinda....desensitized to the desired effect of including such drama in a work.
But the fact is, it gives me serotonin to see the tropes portrayed in a classy yet digestible way so I strive to add to that phenomenon.
The "star-crossed lovers trope" is as old as time and as real as you can get when it comes to romance across any type of "distance", whether it be geographical or in terms of how difficult it is to spend time together due to other people or other factors. Distance can be a dealbreaker for some people, which is understandable, and it breaks my heart when becomes to much a barrier for characters to want to overcome, thus giving up on each other. I can factor in my own experience and observation when I say being truly in love with someone can stretch across the universe if need be. I want to see more stories where that is displayed, as I know for a fact that it can work out.
The "interspecies romance" trope is actually a pretty "safe" analogical expression for a lot of things - interracial romance, cultural appreciation, and just general empathy towards those who are different. Naturally romance does not factor into all of those things, but the subject of there being such a strong bridge between two different types of people can get all of those conversations started, one way or another. In my works, the romance between two people of different species with morphological differences for adjusting to completely different environments can (and most often does) set the stage for introducing a new era of compromise - if not overhaul of how things are handled. Best thing about it is how symbolic it is of all this - inhuman creatures are not directly relatable like humans are, but their stories can evoke the same kind of reaction one would get between groups of people in real life that would treat each other like inhuman creatures.
There will be more tropes discussed later, but these provide a really good basis for my "typecasting" as a writer and dev!
Also friendly reminder to take the survey if and when you give the game a try, the responses will help IMMENSELY:
