Loading...Here's a fun little NES programming trick I was shown tonight.
The problem: how to hide sprites that pass over HUD at the bottom of the screen?
The HUD isn't actually on a separate layer or anything, so how can I get sprites to go behind it? 🧵
Solution: At the moment the HUD starts drawing, clear all the sprite graphics to blank tiles.
Technically, the sprites continue to render over the HUD, but now they are just empty squares!
Turns out that this is exactly how how Super Mario Bros 3 handled things!
