Hello all!
I’d like to begin by announcing I’m currently editing the next video devlog for Project Another World. It should be with you soon.
Subscribe here if you wanna watch!
Now, on to chain attacks!
If you don’t already know, Project Another World was inspired by Persona 5. In that game, there’s a super cool mechanic known as the baton pass!
The baton pass lets another player act after the current player knocks down an enemy. So, you could have four different characters act in one turn which is pretty cool.
Additionally, it’s a nice reward for targeting an enemy’s weakness and reinforces the idea of teamwork.
I’m hoping to achieve a similar idea with Project Another World’s CHAIN ATTACKS! (Name still a work in progress)
Once you knock down an enemy, you have the opportunity to initiate a chain attack with an “available” ally.
Therefore, allies that are knocked out, disabled due to a status effect (E.G Frozen. Sleep. Knocked Down) or already chained with, cannot be selected.
Once you select an ally, you are taken to the chain zone which displays three different views.
To the right, you have a selection wheel that displays the unlocked chain attacks of your selected partner and details about the highlighted skill.
(Chain attacks are gradually unlocked by strengthening your bond with that character through story events.)
The Top left, you have a camera view of the player who initiated the chain attack doing their thing.
Lastly, bottom left is the tactical view. This displays the area of effect of the selected chain attack in all directions.
As the chain attack will be triggered from your partner’s position, I figured it’d be helpful to know which enemies you can potentially target with each skill.
The skill selected in the video is called the Quick blast! I simply made this skill to test the chain attack mechanic. Do not expect this to be in the game.
Anyway, the Quick Blast is a magical air attack that deals low damage. However, has a 50% chance of knocking down a unit.
Therefore, if you’re lucky enough, you could get the chance to keep the chain going.
Yes, chain attacks can keep going until all available players have been chained with. Therefore, you could act FOUR TIMES in one turn!
Pretty cool, right?!
Also, don’t worry about an enemy dodging as chain attacks are undodgeable!
And, if you don’t want to initiate a chain attack, simply don’t press anything as the UI is only displayed for a few seconds until the opportunity passes.
Did you notice the “X Enemies Remaining” text in the chain partner selection UI? You may be wondering what that’s counting down to…
For now, that’s a secret which I’ll reveal at a later date!
Thanks for reading and be sure to check out the Project Another World Devlog series on my YouTube Channel!
