Probably a new style. Decided to take inspiration from CD, Classic, and Mania.
Another major part of V3.2.2 is sprite touch-ups, re-sprites, and new animations.
Here's one of Sonic's touched up moves, Sonic Eagle. His face is more expressive, and the smearing has been improved.
