Hensen Hopper

In this top-down shmup, you control Hensen Hopper, a vigilante grasshopper from the lower west side of The Garden who has taken it upon himself to take back his home from the control of the nefarious Yellow Jackets! Armed with his trusty honey-gun, you will help Hensen fight back against the Yellow Jackets with the aim of putting an end to their reign of terror and saving The Garden from villainous insects!


This game fully supports the following input modes:

  • Keyboard/Mouse

  • Xbox controller

The controls will be explained by in-game hints but are also listed below.

Later start than usual... Got distracted by playing Minecraft haha!

I want to get the beetle shell power-up fully implemented today but I also have some other chores I need to get done and not a whole lot of time so we'll see how that goes.

I've been working on some proper visual art for the beetle shell when it's equipped! I've also gone ahead and drawn a break animation for it. All I need to do now is actually set all of this up in Unity which I'll probably do on Tuesday.

Okay, so I've gotten the functionality for the beetle shell render over the player working! (using the first 3 frames from the beetle shell collect animation as placeholder sprites, these ARE NOT the final sprites)

So I've spent an hour and a half accomplishing ultimately nothing today so far. I love programming, it's a life-long special interest of mine, but I also HATE it SO MUCH sometimes! (warning: this is a rant)

Here's a short demonstration of the beetle shell power-up in-action! It's not very obvious what it does at the moment because I still need to work on a lot of the effects for it, but the functionality is there if you pay attention to the health bar!

I've been working on the sprite for the beetle shell power-up drop! I'm thinking when you collect this one, it will kind of poof away similarly to the enemies when they're defeated and play an "equip" sound.

I've replaced the health text on the upper-left corner of the HUD with a healthbar!

I'm off for the next two days so I should be able to get quite a lot done for Hensen here! I kinda feel like upgrading/updating the HUD right now so that might be what I do today. Yeah, yeah, beetle shell power-up, I'll get to it when I get to it, shush.

This will probably be the last thing I do today because it's getting pretty late (by my standards since I work very early mornings) but I've gotten the internal implementation for the beetle shell power up working already!!!

I think I might have the beetle drop a beetle shell power up that makes Hensen immune for 3 hits (as the beetle's shield does for the beetle). That would be a great excuse to begin working on power ups!
