“Now's the time, Portal Master!”
Welcome back to Skylands, Portal Master. Things have changed quite a bit since your departure, for the better and for the worse, but there's one very notable thing that may catch your eye: the Slayers!
It's time to take a journey into the many realms of Skylands — a journey for both returning Portal Masters and new ones, too, that is!
Story
It's been more than a decade since the events of Skylanders Imaginators, and the realms of Skylands have prospered and flourished verily. The Skylanders have been holding the fort since your departure, leading many evil factions to be rather dormant, ever since Kaos got imprisoned in a jar. Well, that is until now...
A new threat has chosen Skylands as its nutritious meal: the multiversal Empire of the Dark Void. They had arrived from a Darkrift Gate located in their Grand Citadel of the Far Outlands. Led by their masterful-yet-polite Empress, Lord Umbra Vesper, the Dark Void sought after the now adult Kaos — who was currently being held in Cloudcracker Prison.
During his time in Cloudcracker Prison, Kaos had been reading many books on RiftSpace and Riftology. But this literate hiatus for good would actually be his freetime to secretly scheme a new secretly evil plan, only to be interrupted by a fragmenting explosion across the prison. When Kaos was unexpectedly broken free from behind the bars of the Traptanium-built Hell (his words by the way), he was confused as to how the whole prison bursted into bits. But then he was greeted by Lord Vesper, who explained why and how Kaos was broken out.
The cunning Empress explained to Kaos that the Dark Void had been on a daring conquest across RiftSpace and its many connected universes, and that she wanted Kaos' aid. At first, Kaos denied her invitation, saying he doesn't work with foreign people because he usually always gets betrayed by them! But then Vesper persuaded Kaos by showing him a puissant crystal known as Darkrite.
Darkrite is a powerful gem found throughout the Isles of the Dark Void, usually in deep cave deposits, that hold many great powers. Darkrite is one of the main sources of power in the Dark Void's army, because it can transform even the weakest of weaklings into stronger versions of themselves. Although there are a few cons once infused with Darkrite: their skin turns to a darker, purple hue; and they also grow glowing, purple crystals on their spine. At least they look cool afterward.
After learning of this new source of ultimate evil, and seeing how it could enhance his army to be truly unstoppable, Kaos decided to join in on her conquest. And so, the Dark Void, with the aid of Kaos' grand army of ultimate doom, began to conquer Skylands. Little did they realize though that the Slayers were prepared... Or were they?
