How does one make a good text based cutscene to play inbetween levels?

I have no clue how to appeal to players with text cutscenes and I wnt to fix that.

I've been thinking about what the object of Cosmic Drifter should be; what's the end game? Maybe I should go back to basics and do a "player has amnesia and is trying to uncover their past" or "player is trying to uncover a mystery". Too cliche?
